YORKI1 Posted July 16, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2012 I am arriving in September at JFK and want to hire a car for a week before our cruise on the QM2. Is it possible to pick up a car at JFK and drop-off near Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, then get a car to the ship? Which companies are they? I have tried to search the car rental companies web sites but they just list addresses and I don't know if they are near Brooklyn Cruise Terminal or not. Thank you. njhorseman Posted July 16, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 16, 2012 Both Hertz and Avis have locations in downtown Brooklyn on Atlantic Avenue. They are a relatively short distance...perhaps two miles or so from the cruise terminal. You'll have to check if their hours of operation suit your needs...they may not be open 7 days a week, for example.
YORKI1 Posted July 17, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted July 17, 2012 Thank you. How easy would it be to get a cab from Atlantic Avenue to the cruise terminal.
njhorseman Posted July 17, 2012 #4 Share Posted July 17, 2012 You should be able to get a taxi...it's even possible that the rental car company will take you to the pier if you ask in advance. If neither of the above work out, I would call a local car service, Arecibo, http://www.arecibocc.com/ at 718-783-6465, and they should be able to dispatch a car to pick you up within a few minutes. Rare mking8288 Posted July 17, 2012 #5 Share Posted July 17, 2012 The Avis on busy Atlantic Ave. (locals refer to Boerum Hill/Prospect Park neighborhood) is closer to the Red Hook terminal - about 1.5 miles away - whereas the closest Hertz on Union Street is near Grand Army Plaza, about 1/2 mile further awy. Avis is open until 3PM on Saturday & until 9 PM otherwise - please verify & confirm with local office directly. From either places, you might find a yellow taxi cruising for a fare, locals use neighborhood-based car service to get around if not using bus or subway - some taxis might be "off-duty" with lights on while others are heading back to Manhattan after dropping their last fare/pax off. We've used "Eastern Car Service" for pickup - and the fare should be under $15 with no toll whatsoever from Avis/Hertz - no more than a 10 to 15 minutes ride with traffic lights & stop signs only. Toll-free # is 866-499-7177 - https://www.easterncarservice.com/ They usually have a car at our south Brooklyn requested pickup location within 10 minutes - except for bad weather & during shift changes, etc. Avis (Location Code: XB4) 211 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11201 , US (1) 718-522-7407 And, of course - you can always check with Dial 7 or Carmel for a quote to the terminal. smeyer418 Posted July 17, 2012 #6 Share Posted July 17, 2012 there is a new hertz office across the street from the avis office at atlantic off court streets. no one refers to this as Boerum Hill...its either Cobble Hill or Brooklyn Heights.. Boerum Hill doesn't start until smith street.
