robjoetayjess Posted July 18, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 18, 2012 We are considering a 17 ft. boat rental from H20 Sports. Has anyone ever rented from them? Planning on going for 3-4 hrs. on Tuesday morning before leaving Bermuda at 5:30 pm. Is it feasible to do this on our last day? We will either do this or head over to St. Georges in the early am and get back in time for sail away.
blue_water Posted July 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 18, 2012 We spent a week in Bermuda a few weeks ago and rented a 17' from H2O. Great day and one of the best excursions we've done. You can go where you want (depending on the sea conditions) and stop for a private lunch on a private island beach. We enjoyed boating from Mangrove Bay where H2O is located up to Somerset Bridge and back to the Dockyard, all of the West End is an excellent area to explore. The boat is very easy to use and there is room for 2 couples easy. The rear can get wet around the motor when the boat is not moving so just put your bag in the front. Great experience and great staff, we loved our day on the water, it's a unique perspective of Bermuda. You can do it on any day, just go by the weather. You probably don't have to reserve early unless there are alot of cruisers on island. They will let you reserve for 4 hrs and if you decide you only need 3 hrs you can return then. I would carry a cell phone with their number just in case.
robjoetayjess Posted July 18, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted July 18, 2012 Thanks so much! With all the info out there, it's great to hear from someone who has done it. Can't wait till we sail on Friday!!
amelie0119 Posted July 22, 2012 #4 Share Posted July 22, 2012 We'd like to pack a picnic and bottle of wine to take on the Whaler with us. But I didn't think we could bring food or alcohol off the ship. Can anyone recommend somewhere to pick-up some good sandwiches and a bottle of wine? blue_water Posted July 23, 2012 #5 Share Posted July 23, 2012 The pharmacy right in the Dockyard has a great deli, not sure about wine in Dockyard? H2O states they have a store where you can buy everything so e-mail them, they may have a bottle or may even get one for you. Burrow's Lightbourn Ltd in Sandy's Parish sells spirits and wine, not sure if they may be an option on the way to H2O at Cambridge Beaches in Mangrove Bay or Somerset Bridge Watersports. Google them or call when there. There is wineonline.bm which delivers but has a $100 minimum.
Boston proper Posted July 27, 2012 #6 Share Posted July 27, 2012 We rented a 17' boat from H2O on July 22. It was the best excursion we've done in our four visits to Bermuda. The staff was helpful and provided us with a map (the same one you get from NCL) but marked the areas where we could venture. We started in Mangrove Bay and crossed under the Watford Bridge and motored through the great sound to Somerset Bridge (fun!) into Ely's Harbor. We anchored for a while and swam with many sea turtles. It was a windy day and there was a lot of chop in the open waters so we decided to turn around and come back through the protected harbor rather than continue in a complete circle which would take us past the Vixen wreck (recommended by H2O, especially for snorkellers) and Long Bay. We rented the boat for three hours and used 3 gallons of gas. The cost of the fuel ($11/gallon) was added to our bill. Well worth it! We can't wait to rent a boat again and highly recommend H20. After returning the boat, we walked up to Somerset Country Squire for drinks, and then took a cab back to the Dockyard. It was a great day and we'd definitely recommend H20 for a boat rental. blue_water Posted July 28, 2012 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2012 Yes, H2O and Sometset Bridge are both great operators.
blue_water Posted July 28, 2012 #8 Share Posted July 28, 2012 Somerset can be a cheaper day because they have the smaller 13 ft boat, and they also pay your taxi one way, and they provide a cell phone. I would highly recommend taking a cell phone. We had motor troubles and if not for the assistance of a family on a yacht we would have been adrift for hours. It is hard paddling a 17 ft boat with small oars! Since we were booked for 4 hours and this was after 3 hrs, they wouldn't come looking for us until after the 4 hours was up. So either carry your cell or use SB.:
