I will do a self-walking tour that will include the Port Market and the Old City, but others from our group will be going to a ranch.

I am pretty good with a map, a hand held GPS, and public transportation.

I can walk 3 to 20 miles in the course of a single day. I find that if I walk, I see a bunch of really interesting, off the beaten path sites that I might miss on a tour.

Hi would you like to share you walking tour ?:)

I am just starting to put it together, but I will walk from the port, through the port market into the city to see the big soccer park. Then I will cut south to the Old Town and see the plaza of the big revolution and other sites. It looks like 6-8 miles. I have 9 hours to walk it, so I should be in good shape. I would be happy to share it with you, when I actually create the plan. Just looking now.

I did 11 museums and 3 transpos in Oslo in about 6 hours in 2008 (for less than $35). I love to plan this type of thing.

When are you headed to SA?

It looks like most of the "action" is in the Old Town. It is right when you get off the boat. I will probably walk the 6 km into the center of Montevideo to see the Palace (govt) and the soccer stadium. There are a lot of museum and shops in the old town. I will also plan to grab lunch there. (I can eat a good lunch, because, I will walk off all those yummy calories, right?)

I always carry that goofy little map with me when I go walking. This gives any cab driver a great visual should I get lost or tired. So far I have never had to take a cab back to the ship...

Having been in Montevideo this past February, I'd say you all have the right idea to do your own walking tour. I had purchased a HAL tour (something about culture and architecture?). It was so simple that I soon regretting having paid extra for an escort of sorts. DIY-ers from the ship were everywhere we went. When I got my bearings I realized they had simply bused us to the far side of the town and were walking us back toward the ship.

I actually abandoned the tour group when I ran into some friends from the ship doing their own thing. (I did inform the guide so he wouldn't be held responsible.)

Do you remember what bus? Where did they take the bus to begin their walking tour?

When I was Montevideo there was a shuttle to a leather shop in town. We did not return to the ship on the shuttle but enjoyed the walk and we were able to see a lot of the town.

OK - with the above map in front of you:

-We docked at the top where it says "Puerto de Montevideo."

-The HAL "Architecture" tour bus took us counter clockwise around the perimeter to Plaza Espana and the Teatro Solis (don't miss it) and dropped us off. From there we walked a meandering path that included some monuments and art museums. There's not much of interest to the right of Plaza Independencia. I dropped out of the organized tour at Plaza Constitucion near the cathedral. There are open-air cafe's and market stalls there and it is where you would begin wandering the pedestrian shopping mall on Sarandi Street. You can meander in a fashion that ultimately takes you back to the Mercado del Puerto near the ship.

Try to make time to eat in the Mercado del Puerto. This is a "food court" on steroids and I had the absolute best steak dinner of my life there - at a very reasonable price.

The above map has a scale so you can see none of it is too far. I was a healthy 69 year old and had no trouble at all.

Note to "We're sailing away..." - can you be more specific? Even Google wouldn't tell me what a "stough" is.

. The Holocaust museum has been declared a national historic landmark. Next to the major opera house (Téatro Solis)' date=' there is a square named after Golda Meir. The Albert Einstein monument stands in Rodo Park, opposite the casino. There is also a Jewish cemetery,

Ok, I took that post as a challenging question. I already showed where the Teatro Solis is. Rodo Park appears to be way off to the right as you stand at the dock. Can't get a handle on how far, but I doubt it's a walk. No luck finding specific locations of the Jewish cemetery or the Holocaust Museum (maybe for security reasons). If I really wanted to know how to get there, I'd contact one of the synagogues in Montevideo (see list below):

For what it's worth, I had signed up for a Jewish History tour in Buenos Aires. Unfortunately, it was cancelled for unspecified reasons.
