pdmlynek Posted July 22, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 22, 2012 There is of course the train, or tour buses, on which you can book seats on your own, instead of booking it through the cruise line. But as far as public transport outside of the metro areas goes, it is my understanding that it is rather rare. There is no Greyhound in Alaska. mytime53 Posted July 22, 2012 #3 Share Posted July 22, 2012 You would be extremely limited in where you could go, when you could go, and what you could do once you got there.
mapleleaves Posted July 22, 2012 #4 Share Posted July 22, 2012 Where? Alaska is a big state. Do you want to fly into Anchorage for a land tour? If so, the Alaska Railroad has service to Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, Girdwood, Seward and Whittier. www.alaskarailroad.com There is also the Park Connection Bus which services Seward, Anchorage, Denali, Talkeetna and Fairbanks (whittier when a ship is in port). www.alaskacoach.com There's a bus service to Homer ... Homer Stage Line I think it's called. SE Alaska is a different story. Most of the ports are on islands so if you want to visit other locations a common transportation is the ferry (Alaska Marine Hwy) or fly. You might want to borrow a few Alaska travel books from your library, like Frommers. Or google frommers on-line.
