Why did I shake my water?

Just curious..on my June sailing of EOS, when reboarding the ship in St Maarten, I had an open bottle of water. The security agent asked me to shake the bottle. I'm assuming it was to check if I was smuggling alcohol. Does alcohol bubble when shaken?

Yes, different alcohols respond in different ways to water when shaken

Shake a bottle of water and notice how long it takes the bubbles to go away.

Then shake a bottle of vodka and notice how long it takes for the bubbles to go away.

 

This method was often used by moonshiners to tell the proof of their product.

Me too. And mine was mostly a big chunk of ice because the bottle had been frozen. :rolleyes:
