Vancouver ????

Recommended Posts

Hello Putterdude, our cruise is Sept 22nd 2013, so we will fly in on the 21st. Although the Days Inn has received nice reports because of its location, the complaints are for the small and dark rooms. I then focused on the Holiday at 110 Howe St and thinking of moving closer to the cruise terminal and restaurants & shops on Robson St . I am even considering the Hyatt. One problem with the Hyatt and Holiday, they are prepaid Hotels. For one night we don't need anything fancy for two ladies but am thinking we would be better closer to the restaurants and shops. My friend can't walk long distances, in fact I asked her about her ability of standing in the cruise terminal and she felt she would be ok.

My personal choice would be the Hyatt, in my mind it is about as close to center ice as you can be in Vancouver. It is close to everything, it was completely remodeled prior to the 2010 Olympics and I have stayed there recently. If it were my vacation I would make a refundable reservation somewhere now then watch Priceline and Hotwire for something better and less expensive next summer....you have lots of time there is no reason to get tied into something right now.

As for boarding at Canada Place....if there is the slightest hesitation or reservation about standing in line, I would request a wheelchair assist thru your cruise line. With that a porter will push her with you thru customs, security and to the waiting lounge from then a junior steward will push her right to your cabin....I have a DW who has MS and we do it all the time, it will also reduce your time in having to stand in line.

Thank you Putterdude, I have at the moment confirmed reserv at the Blue Horizon. I was looking at the Hyatt, and if it were just myself I would probably go with them, best rate I am finding now is around $270 w/tax, which I am not sure she can handle. thank you for the tip about a wheelchair. I know those cruise terminals can mean standing in line as you wait to check in and will make sure she can handle that and if any concern I can have my TA arrange for assistance. She will need assistance at the airport anyway, because she said she can't walk those distances to the gates.

When I was checking Blue Horizon, they were showing booked thru June 2013, so thought I better get us a room.:)

There is certainly nothing wrong with the Blue Horizon, its location is good, the rooms are large and it is very popular with cruisers during the Alaska season. If your companion is concerned with airports and making arrangements for wheelchair assists then I would strongly recommend similar arrangements be made with your cruise line at Canada Place.

Ask for the wheel chair assistance - it gets both of you thru the line much faster. We have a wheel chair for my Dad who always travels with us and love the line short cut it provides us :):)

Enjoy your time in Vancouver and your cruise.

Afternoon, I spoke with my TA, and she informed me they would call in and arrange one for her for the cruise terminal. She will need one for getting around in the airports, as far as the cruise ship, she said she will be fine.

BC thank you, Vancouver is such a lovely City but it has been a few years since we stayed there. I am looking forward to seeting Victoria on this cruise also.

I know my friend will be pleased to know I am able to get this all arranged for her as well.:) Friends keep telling me I should go in the travel business since I do all the arranging for our ( DH & I ) trips, map out places to see.:D. I am not sure I would want to get that involved. LOL

We were there last week after our cruise. They checked us in at 10Am no issue... They have huge rooms upgraded us to 19th floor with balcony. Hop on Hop off Bus stops at their door. Plenty places to eat and shop in short distance... Very good pricing. Would def. use it again.

At the BH you are within 2 to 3 blocks of all the restaurants you can handle plus the HOHOs shut down at 6pm. You are also in heart of the (OK, a bit west of) the upscale Robson Shopping District, I know your companion lacks some mobility but a HOHO really won't do much for her.:)

Under those circumstances a HOHO would make absolutely no sense at all and I am a huge fan of HOHOs. Even if you wanted to leave the Robson St. area for dinner a $10 cab ride each way will get you to pretty much any restaurant in the downtown area.:)

I will add a link to Robson area restaurants....within a block I can recommend Joe Fortes, Cin Cin, Earls, the Keg, the Cactus Club, and if you wish Red Ronin.

Thank you for the suggestions and link to restaurants.:). I believe a lot of what we do the first afternoon & evening will depend on my friend, but we certainly won't be out late, I would also imagine we will probaly meet up with fellow cruisers at our hotel and socialize.

Just got back. Vancouver is a beautiful city. I took the trolley around, boarding from the Westin Bayshore. The trolley was an add-on they had added because they were busy and it uexpectently stopped at the Canada Place instead making a circle back to the hotel. I decided to walk the sea wall back rather than wait for another to the hotel since it was a beautiful day. This was taking a chance since mobility is a little issue. However, it was one of the highlights of the trip! It was flat and had plenty of benches. I walked a little and sat down and watched the seaplanes come in, etc. Lots of people and shops. What a lovely day!

Had to laugh when I saw this comment and want to respond:

Yeah, unlike Las Vegas, where there are no benches because if you're sitting you're not gambling in the casinos or spending in the malls! :D

Yes, those meanies want the old, tired people to sit and "rest" on the seat of the stools located in front of a slot machine!
