zebra Posted August 17, 2012 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2012 We will be visiting Halifax in October and wondered what the "do not miss" things to do are in the area. We have heard that Lunenburg is a must. Is this so? Also for those who have visited before is there interesting shopping/restaurants within walking distance of the ship?? We have never been to the area, so all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
SailBadtheSinner Posted August 17, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 17, 2012 Since Halifax is not part of New England but in Canada, I suggest you post/search the Canadian Ports of Call forum: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=39 SBtS
bjay3 Posted August 19, 2012 #3 Share Posted August 19, 2012 The ship docks right in the downtown area and there is a very lively waterfront area with park, boutiques/stores & restaurants. Then you can walk up any street from the waterfront into the main downtown area. Walk straight up to the fort and the clock tower. Great view from up there and the fort has interesting tours/commentary on the history of the area. You can also take the ferry across the harbour. Halifax is a very compact and walkable city. However, if you want to experience a bit more of maritime Canada, take the cruise ship's tour to Lunenberg. It is really quaint, lots of history, old ships, maritime museums etc. Hope this helps
VillaHappy Posted August 19, 2012 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2012 We enjoyed the Titanic museum. It is a 15 minute, beautiful, walk from the pier.
patmama Posted August 24, 2012 #5 Share Posted August 24, 2012 We stood in a line waiting for a free bus (FRED) when all we had to do was turn right, walk the waterfront. I enjoyed the Titantic museum (you just pay as you enter) Also, we ate lunch at a picnic table and got food from a local ventor that was great. Also, we did a whale excursion that we reserved ourselves that was right on the dock. (We did not see a whale, but the captain tried.) You can walk just about anywhere in town. I really enjoyed this town.
trophy_23 Posted August 25, 2012 #6 Share Posted August 25, 2012 We walked out from the ship and got a cab/van. They would take up to 6 people for $120, and do a city tour including a trip to Peggy's cove and the Swissair memorial. Also had a chance to do a little shopping. I think it was great value for what we saw. We were able to visit the immigration museum etc on the pier when we got back.

cokie60 Posted August 27, 2012 #13 Share Posted August 27, 2012 The tours are four to seven hours long. The cost is $45 per hour per vehicle. We would pick you up at dock site. We suggest you depart on arrival so we can get ahead of the tour bus traffic. We would have your name on a sign at dock side, you can’t be missed. The tour time starts when we leave the pier. The most requested tour is the five hour Halifax/Peggy’s Cove tour but the length of the tour is all up to you. We start at dock side and do Historic south end of the city. Then we go to Horse Shoe Island were we would get out of the vehicle with a full narrative on the Halifax Explosion, the war of 1812 and Historic value of the North West Arm. Then we would proceed to the Titanic Site for full narrative. Then we would drive to the Sugar Shack for first rest room stop. While at the site we can take in the 10 minute tour of the Maple Syrup Industry in Nova Scotia and try some of the free maple syrup products or you can purchase up to 100 different maple syrup products on site. If we are then interested in lobster we must order so that it will be ready on arrival at Indian Harbour for lunch. This is not a restaurant; it’s a retailer of lobster. Last season the prices were $8 per lb served and $1 per oyster on the half shell. We would have our meal on the fisherman’s pier on picnic tables. Take your camera or If you want a full restaurant experience Shaw’s restaurant is available with its chowders and full menu of ocean products. You can eat on the patio facing the fishing village bring your camera. On the way to Indian harbor we may stop at the Peggy’s Cove Museum. Indian Harbour is just a three minute drive to Peggy’s Cove. At Peggy’s Cove (one of the most beautiful lighthouses and coves in the world) this is a half hour stop on dock side. Many shops and boutiques to spend time in. Take your camera. Then we return to complete Historic Halifax, Citadel Hill, Public Gardens and historic down town tour. We can drop you off at the ship or at the board walk which is a seven minute walk to the ship. On the walk back you can visit the Titanic Museum/boutiques/Crystal factory/street entertainers/and the many street vendors. There is so much to do and see in Historic Halifax that you may want to vary your tour. All tours are create to your needs and can be changed on the fly. If you are interest in confirming or you want to ask any question feel free. Confirmation needs are, your name, date of arrival, ship name, number of passengers, cell phone number if you have one. Are vehicles are vans and or sedans. The vans are six passengers and if you add more passengers just bring them along the cost per van is the same. WANTING TO FIND FOUR MORE PEOPLE TO SHARE THE EXPENSE OF THIS TOUR. VANS HOLD SIX PEOPLE AND WE CAN SHARE THE EXPENSE. WILL BE IN HALIFAX SEPTEMBER 6. WILL BE ON CARNIVAL GLORY. BE IN PORT FROM 9:00am-6pm. LET ME KNOW IF INTERESTED. CONTACT INFO IS: mail@halifaxtourguys.com
sail7seas Posted August 31, 2012 #14 Share Posted August 31, 2012 We love walking the boardwalk straight down from the terminal. On a pretty day, it's a great walk. We always stop along the way for a lobster lunch preferably at a restaurant with an outdoor patio. :) We've toured the Titanic Museum and really enjoyed our visit there. Sounds gruesome for vacation but we also visited the cemetary where bodies of Titanic victims are buried. It was part of a tour we took years ago and was quite interesting. It gave us the picture of what a diverse population Halifax enjoys. It's a great port IMO

We went to Cobh (Ireland), the last port for the ship. Fortunate to have the Titanic historian Michael Martin give a presentation and mini tour of the area. Interesting museum there. Where is the cemetery?
Suitcasefull Posted September 1, 2012 #16 Share Posted September 1, 2012 We've been to Halifax a couple of times and highly recommend the trip to Lunenberg. We didn't know about it first trip. It's not as much a made-for-tourism place although does have nice shopping and is easy walking. Enjoyed the lovely architecture of homes and churches and fantastic lobster at a restaurant next to the little marine museum there. On our day we stopped at another little town where they decorate each yard for Halloween with fantastic figures so you'd be the right month for that!
