Disney or Carnival?

I'm debating between a full transit Panama Canal cruise on Disney and Carnival.

Dates/itineraries are as follows:

Disney Wonder

12/9-12/23 (14 nights)

LA / Miami

8 sea days

4 ports: Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Cartagena & Costa Maya

Carnival Miracle

3/16-3/31 (15 nights)

NYC / LA

8 sea days

5 ports: Grand Turk, Cartagena, Puntarenas, Puerto Quetzal, Cabo

I'm looking at 2 inside rooms. Cruise cost is similar. NYC is local so I'd only need 1 way flights from LA back to NYC if we did Carnival. We've only sailed on NCL, Cunard and an old RCCL ship. We are 2 adults, 3 kids under 5 and 1 grandparent. I've heard rave reviews about Disney service, food, entertainment, etc. but I know there are Carnival fans out there too. I always considered Disney to be on the expensive end and thought this might be a good value.

Any feedback on which line you would go with?

Based on the cruise lines only I would opt for Disney for the reasons you mentioned. I'll admit I am not a huge Carnival cheerleader but being able to board the ship in NY and one less airline flight is something to consider.

Been on neither, but if the price is around the same, Disney. I'd factor in the additional air though. 1 less port on Disney, but with three little-uns, maybe not a big deal. From what I've read, both lines have good kids programs, but hey, a four-year old meeting Mickey - priceless. Minimum age for kids programs on Disney is 3 months. Carnival is 2 years. Might be a factor.
