R.I., Newport

I have been to Newport Grand a gazillion times as I live 20 minutes from this venue. It is basically a small video slot parlor but does have one or two virtual black jack tables located on the lower level in the no smoking section. I suspect the ship's tender will drop you off in the Bowen's Wharf area which is not too far from Newport Grand but not really in walking distance from the wharf, about a 10 minute cab ride depending on the traffic. You can easily get a cab from the Visitor's Center which is about a 5 minute walk from Bowen's Wharf. Honestly, as much as I like to gamble, if I were making a 1st time visit to Newport with so much to see and do there I would not waste my time going to Newport Grand as it is small in size and even smaller in payouts.

Dear Nightengale212,

Thank you.;)

Your very kind and considerate Maam.

Never have gone to the Casino Grand in Newport, R.I. . Thanks for the Heads Up^

Liking Slots is a past time. I hope they have a better pay-out than on all cruise ships too. Do they comp you in Newport?

One gentleman said the #63 Bus ( Motorcoach ) goes to the casio (Grand) . Is that the best and most cost effective.. see my N.E. rots are showing up..

One of my uncles was the CMDR at Jamestown in the US Navy.

One of my Great Uncles was Master of the Lodge , a 33rd Degree Mason in your Capitol. We had a chain of different department/appliance stores and haberdasheries before the previous Great Depression throughout NE and NY/NJ.

We have had family in R.I. for a few centuries. It is a wonderful State you are in , but in any place there are things great and not so well.

Again I appreciate your heads up ^. What else would you recommend to see besides the normal cliff walk I do normally when in Newport by ship, now?

Sorry to say, Newport Grand does not comp, and believe you me if anyone should get a comp there it is me!!!! You can sign up for their players card, but their point system is so low you would have to spend years playing there just to have enough points to get a $10 buffet.

With regards to payouts, if your play style is putting $20 in a machine and hitting $50 then cashing out you may make a little money.

Newport is very dear to my heart as I was born in the Navy base hospital as my late Dad was career Navy who met and married my native R.I. mother. A few years ago I worked as a Newport tour guide and as guide at the Breakers Mansion, so as a former tour guide I would suggest if you like to walk to take a walking tour through the Easton's Point section of Newport. This is the colonial section of Newport that is often overlooked by tourists as most head to the gilded era mansions. This area boasts the highest concentration of restored colonial homes in America with original owners being sea captains, merchants, and most notably the highly reconized Quaker furniture makers the Townsends and Goddards. Another option would be to visit Doris Duke's mansion Rough Point. This is quite an interesting property, and last I was by there the camels Doris had roaming her property as part of her security outfit were still there on patrol.

What ever you choose to do have fun, and try to fit in a bowl of clam chowder at the Black Pearl as IMO it is the best around :)

Dear Nightengale212,

Thank you.

Knowing more from you about the ( so called Casino ) gives me pause. I had written them before and never had even the courtesy of a reply.

I guess that should have told me also a wee bit about character.

The US Navy is great! All my Uncle but one were officers as my dad was too.

Was you mum from Newport or Providence?

Many trips up from the Garden State to R.I. for clients I spent.

I have never had the pleasure of viewing Doris Dukes R.I. Estate yet.

Her dads place in NJ is wonderful and astounding. I was lucky in the science area and horticulture to know it.

Is a bus going to it?

Your walkabout is a wonderful idea too Maam. A big part of my New England family were Quakers.R.I. , Ma, N.H., Vt. and Mainers then too part of Ma.

Thank you for being so very caring, knowledgeable, nice, helpful and wise!

Happy to provide any info and suggestions I have to make your visit to Newport memorable. I would suggest for transportation questions about getting around Newport to call the Newport Visitor's Center, or log onto their web site.

Have a nice cruise : )

P.S. My mother was from Bristol. My maternal family ended up in Bristol via Italy as this seemed to the place to go to for many of the Italian immigrants from the same area in Italy as my family.

Dear Casino Player,

HellOoooothere! Thats is always a nicer word than the NJ word.. FORGETABOUTIT...eh..

The Princess Ship ( CB ) was again well..it is going to be a refurb soon. The Casino we saw before when it first came to NYC, NY was one deck down now those Window Suites still never book up.. and that was one reason the CBC, California Bean Counters, did it to make more higher paying cruiser cabins and revenues.. another C B C blundering Failure.. ..

You would have so enjoyed the CRAPS.. It was one of the best games played and all the time people were at them. BUT a note here.. The IMHO RUDE Casino Staff, especially one India Indian, made it close the last night just after midnight friday. HUH.. having one of the largest Revenue Nights closing early.. I guess lazy is as Lazy Does..

But in Business I would think you would want all the Revenues to boost the Bottom Line____________+.

Food was ok. Only as the C BC did really cut out a lot of Cruisers nice attributes now.

1.) No more, SEA FOOD Embarkation Day Buffet

2.) No more, when in the Ports of Call Lunch served in the MDR's.

3.) No More DELI at the Caribe Cafe going aft. That's was great as staff, cruisers and guests could get fresh made to order great preparations which each and every time was a pure personal pleasure and a Princess treasure. We had SOGGY Sandwiches in the Slop Line.. oh sorry the Lido Buffet Line. All they had to do to stop the SOGGY was drain the Greens first.. DUH.. or let people put it on themselves..

4.) No More all you can drink Brewed Coffee on our Coffee Cards

5.) etc..etc..etc..

The Casino and Princess Players Club did Comp us a nice group of things on this cruise again too. Aboard were many wonderful Gamblers from all over the US and World I think the Repo CRUISE IN OCTOBER IS ANOTHER. But we hate the flights now on the High Cost Air Tubes.

If you know others going aboard the CB ask to have Jozef Kudo , a Hungarian and his team member serving with him a young lady from the Ukraine to have as the wait staff .. Phenomenal team..

IMHO R/T on any ship is best.

On the side trip we did as always on our own mostly.

In Boston the Duck SHIP Cruise LineTour is now right out the Black Falcon door. So in that made the day ..

The fashion cenetr next to it we walked through and low and behold.. we saw one of our dogs , from Nantucket, MA. So yes it made the day and cruise that much better... : - ))

In Halifax, NS, Ca when you go next if weather permitting go off the ship and turn left.. go down to the Park on the peninsula ( Point Pleasant ) where is a wonderful view, walk about, Dogs and people. Not many who cruise go there as no money is spent nor made .. so a Pure Pleasure and Treasure... The walkways are all brand new going by the Canadian Railway and other cargo yards.

In Saint John, N.B.,CA we took the City Bus Tour which is just over two hours you catch it down Water Street where the Horse Drawn Buggies are . As always do your research. Knowing High Tide is essential to see the best actions of Tidal Falls at the St. John River ( Reversing Falls).

In Newport, R.I. it as always is a wonderful State and place.

This time it was so much the better as from the great advice from Nightengale212 !

The surviving Camel, a dromedary is now at the Popcorn Zoo which is Forked River , NJ down the GSP from us about 90 min. So from you probably an hour in time driven.

DUK : NYSE was the families !

Give our regards and love to your wife.
