Grumpy8 Posted September 12, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2012 Will be cruising on the Odin Viking Cruiseline. When you are cruising on your last night. Do you put your luggage out that night, like on the big ships, so the porter can pick them up?
franski Posted September 12, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 12, 2012 Can't speak to Viking (yet) but have travelled with AMA, Uniworld and Scenic - and none of them require luggage out the night before. They usually ask that it be out between 8 & 9 in the morning - unless you leave earlier than that, and you will just bring it out of the room when you leave. H2Otstr Posted September 12, 2012 #4 Share Posted September 12, 2012 Luggage is normally put out about 1 hour before you depart for the airport. We just returned from a Russian Cruise on GCT and we had to have our luggage outside the room at midnight, it was then delivered to the bus. At 1:30 to 1:45 am we had to go to our luggage, identify it and the tag was checked and the sailors put it on the bus. We then left at 2 am for the airport (which was an hour ride) so that we would arrive 3 hours before our flight. The whole process was very well organized. The only problem that we had was that it was very dark near the bus and it was hard to see our luggage. It all looked alike. Most cruise lines have the same procedure if you are using their transfers.
newfirsttimer Posted September 12, 2012 #5 Share Posted September 12, 2012 Your luggage goes out in the hallway in the morning when you go to breakfast and then the staff move the luggage to the dock or bus while you eat and then off you go. If you have made prior arrangements to stay onboard longer due to a later flight, then you need to make arrangements for your luggage to stay with you. There is no luggage storage area like on the big ships and the hallways are quite narrow.

2onboardagain Posted September 13, 2012 #7 Share Posted September 13, 2012 Having sailed on Viking Njord, I can tell you that Viking uses a staggered system for the placement of luggage. You will need to place your luggage in the hallway approximately an hour before your scheduled departure from the ship. On our cruise, there were four cabins that had really early flights and had to depart the ship at 4:00 AM and they were requested to have their luggage in the hallway at 3:30 AM. The next scheduled departure was at 6:45 and they had to have their luggage out at 6:15. So you see that the Viking system keeps the hallway relatively clear and makes for a smooth transfer. I hope you enjoy your voyage!
rjscott Posted September 14, 2012 #8 Share Posted September 14, 2012 To further clarify, on the Idun, all luggage needed to be out of the cabins and in the hallways by 9am. We had a late afternoon flight and our luggage was stashed to one side of the reception area, separate from the luggage of oncoming passengers. Hope this helps. GiannaD Posted September 15, 2012 #9 Share Posted September 15, 2012 As others have posted your luggage goes out about an hour before your departure. The halls on most river ships are narrow and having a lot of luggage in the halls would be a big safety hazard. On a small ship the crews can move the luggage quickly to the reception area and then off the ship as you disembark. The process works well.
