We are travelling on the Zaandam and wish to know if the dividers between the balconies are able to be opened as our friends have the room next door.

Yes - just ask your cabin steward and they should be able to open (And lock open) a portion of the divider between the cabins

On the Zaandam, the door next to the cabin wall opens -- you can see it here in a picture from Joanie's sticky. There are no latches to keep the door open when the ship is moving -- so will it bang.
