serene56 Posted April 19, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 19, 2004 hmm that may be interesting. It wasnt too long ago that the cruiselines stopped going there because of all the crime happening to cruise line passengers. The horror stories that were posted here about St Croix was scarey to say the least. Please keep us posted on your findings. tef43 Posted April 19, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 19, 2004 In 1986 we made a port call at Frederiksted on St Croix. Not many cruise ships had the island on their itineraries even then. Christensted and Fredericksted paled in comparison to Charlotte Amalie and Philipsburg for options for cruise passengers. St Croix seemed to be geared towards the longer-term vacationers as opposed to the day-trippers on the ships. Then Hugo pretty much levelled the place. Most of it has been rebuilt but the crime issue remained. Tom <--- Curmudgeon of the Seas Eleven cruises so far. Up next: Shhhh, it's a surprise! Dance like it hurts, love like you need money, and work when somebody's watching.
cyclonesam172 Posted April 20, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted April 20, 2004 We have vacationed in St. Croix in Chrsitiansted the past 4 years, in 2001 and 2002, both Carnival and Celebrity brought ships into St. Croix. The past 2 years no cruise ships have scheduled St. Croix as a port of call. Even though the ships dock in Frediksted, the preferred city is Christiansted. It is my impression the island is starving for cruise ships and cruise companies could probably negotiate equitable arrangements with the local government. As far as crime, a couple of simple rules - don't venture into strange neighborhoods, and use common sense. We have never experienced a problem the last 4 years and travel the island extensively. The merchants, expecially in Christiansted, are much more laid back and cordial without all the pressure of St. Thomas and St. Marteen. The wharf in Christiansted for restaurants and bars is one of the best in the Caribbean. I'm still looking for the cruise ship that is going to stop in St. Croix this coming winter as reported in their local paper.
