Prices are almost dollar for dollar due to the exchange rate (remember our prices in the Apple store online already include our 10% GST/VAT/sales tax whereas the US store doesn't). Then when leaving the country you can claim the GST back and get a refund (so for an iPad 4G + wifi at A$899 you get $89 back). Plus our iPads are unlocked - they are not carrier specific (as you can use them on any of our 3/4 networks) so you can use them on any network in your home country unlike the only AT&T or Verizon only models.
