veryhotred Posted November 9, 2012 #104 Share Posted November 9, 2012 When we completed lunch, we decided to head back to the suite and see if our large bag had arrived. No such luck. DW and I were exhausted from the wedding, reception and all the running around we did just before everything so she decided to stay in the room. Even though I was also tired, I was still too excited to be on a new ship so I ventured out to take some random pictures. Afterwards I returned to the room to see that our bag hadn’t made it to the cabin yet, and that DW was sound asleep on the sofa with the ship’s channel playing repeatedly. It would soon be time for Muster Drill. I quickly unpacked the garment bag to start getting things put away and went to wake up DW when it was getting time to make our way to the muster station. We left the room to go to D1 which was located in the Blue Lagoon. I wasn't entirely thrilled seeing that we would be required to muster in such a difficult station should there be an issue where the ship would be evacuated. Being a worse case scenario person my entire life, I quickly started my spiel (as DW would call it) about why this space was a terrible idea... First being it was right in the center of the ship and thus we would be required to fight our way through the hoards of other panicked passengers to get to the space, plus the space was loitered with potential debris from the chairs, tables, place settings, etc...Not to mention the deadly spikes on the ceiling of the atrium next to us which DW didn't help any when she told me it would be usefully to hold the bodies of pierced passengers when a rogue wave hit the ship and flipped us over. Thankfully muster soon started and we paid great attention to the crew members showing us how to correctly place a life vest over ourselves, and we listened to the announcer talk about some other safety issues. I was very surprised that so many people were not paying attention, and also surprised that the crew didn't really do anything to make sure people were listening. In all, this drill was over in less than 5 minutes and everyone made their way to the sail-away party on the main pool deck. FRIGGIN hilarious!!! Sounds like something I would say (you) and my husband would say back (her) LOL...love it
snorklinbarb Posted November 9, 2012 #105 Share Posted November 9, 2012 Have enjoyed a couple of new Jewel reviews here including this one! I loved your pics, especially the one of the guy floating on his back (you?) Looks like you were blessed with great weather, too. Is the only difference with "Norwegians Night Out" the name? What was the vodka sponsorship part of the evening? Could you tell us a little about the entertainment around the ship? We realize things change but very much looking forward to another great cruise on Jewel in Jan. Are Fire & Ice still on? If so, any idea how long they'll be on? If you have your Freestyle Dailies, could you see who were the different lounge entertainers? We have our favorites like Ariel Jacobe, Bernie Martini, Fabrizio, and wondering who might be at the piano or singing. Do you recall who the Caribbean band is and the house band? What did you think of them? Who is the CD currently and any idea how long he/she will be on? Any opinion about the CD and his/her staff? Thanks for any additional info! I happen to love food pics (don't know why). What was in the huge wok in one of your night pics? Looked like the chefs were cooking up a storm. Looking forward to sailing with HD Hugo and his team for the 12 nighter in Jan. You were in good hands!:D
Rare CTCruiser001 Posted November 12, 2012 Author #106 Share Posted November 12, 2012 Have enjoyed a couple of new Jewel reviews here including this one! I loved your pics' date=' especially the one of the guy floating on his back (you?) Looks like you were blessed with great weather, too. Yep, that was me! Is the only difference with "Norwegians Night Out" the name? What was the vodka sponsorship part of the evening? The NNO seems to be replacing the Dress up or Not Night. I'm unsure what the sponsorship was about (Ultimat Vodka), but it appears they might be the new "preferred" drink choice over Svedka as is prevalent on the Epic Ice Bar. With the details of the Ice Bar on the Breakaway not including the type of vodka they will serve, I wonder if Norwegian is switching brands while trying to work out kinks in the system? Could you tell us a little about the entertainment around the ship? We realize things change but very much looking forward to another great cruise on Jewel in Jan. We stuck mainly with the CD's organized activities for entertainment. The Quest, Newlywed not so Newlywed, etc shows were a blast and always promise to be original! Are Fire & Ice still on? If so, any idea how long they'll be on? Yes, they were on-board, but I do not know how long they will remain on the ship. If you have your Freestyle Dailies, could you see who were the different lounge entertainers? We have our favorites like Ariel Jacobe, Bernie Martini, Fabrizio, and wondering who might be at the piano or singing. On our sailing we had: Margie Hobbs, Grigorii Zimin, Randon Lauron, & Greg Czaja. Do you recall who the Caribbean band is and the house band? What did you think of them? 'Real Vibes' was the Caribbean band playing on the pool deck, The house band was 'Next Stage' (playing in Spinnaker) and were very good, and always put on a great show. Who is the CD currently and any idea how long he/she will be on? Any opinion about the CD and his/her staff? The CD was Daniel Olsson...While young, he had lots of enthusiasm and his staff seems to like working together. Thanks for any additional info! Visit the Star bar at night and ask for Marcia (bartender)...She was the best one we found on the ship and knew how to take care of her guests! I happen to love food pics (don't know why). What was in the huge wok in one of your night pics? Looked like the chefs were cooking up a storm. We aren't sure as we never went to sample this treat...But I would assume it was some sort of Paella. Looking forward to sailing with HD Hugo and his team for the 12 nighter in Jan. You were in good hands!:D Hugo and his team were amazing! Enjoy your cruise! We can't wait to be able to take that kind of time off from work! :D
solocanadian Posted November 12, 2012 #107 Share Posted November 12, 2012 Really enjoyed all your photos and postings. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Haven't sailed with NCL for many, many years. However your photos have given me "food for thought", pardon the pun, for 2014. I normally sail HAL but don't care for the ship they are bringing to the West Coast in 2014. Perhaps it's time to give NCL a chance. My TA is away right now on an NCL cruise & I'm looking forward to her return & report.:)
Rare CTCruiser001 Posted November 12, 2012 Author #108 Share Posted November 12, 2012 Today we got invited to tour the bridge (twice actually!)...We were invited to tour with our group from CruiseCritic (those who actually showed up!) as well as extended an invitation from the Concierge for the suite guests. We decided the more fun group would be our fellow CruiseCritics! Rare CTCruiser001 Posted November 13, 2012 Author #110 Share Posted November 13, 2012 After the bridge tour we ran into the Suite Paxs being led to the bridge by Ruth, our Concierge. Seeing that many were with her, we decided to go to Cagney's for lunch when it was promised to be relevantly empty. Seafood Risotto by CTCruiser001, on Flickr NY Steak by CTCruiser001, on Flickr Shortly afterwords, we went back to the cabin for some R&R when we heard the Captain announced over the intercom that there had been a serious medical emergency and an USCG helicopter was requested. At this point in time, we were somewhere about 150-180 miles from the coast of North Carolina. The ETA for the helicopter was one hour...And very shortly afterwards, we saw these guys show up. Joe7cri Posted November 13, 2012 #113 Share Posted November 13, 2012 Love all the pictures except the one of that steak. Is that really a steak from Cagney's? Looks a little skimpy, lol. Guest LoveMyBoxer Posted November 13, 2012 #114 Share Posted November 13, 2012 Day Four: Great Stirrup Cay! This (At top) will be the only shot of the island (shown at left) with my actual camera since I decided to leave it in the room safe while off the ship. We instead took my GoPro as this is waterproof and a very versatile camera. Thus, the photos you see from the island will have a very unique look as the lens is a 180 degree wide lens to allow expansive photos. LOVING your review - thank you! Will be on Jewel on Sunday in the Haven! Just one quick question. What's with the conference table and chairs in the cabana? Are there loungers to relax??? Would expect to see that on a buffet not a premium restaurant. I'm not the OP, but when we were on the Star that was about the size and thickness of the steak you got at lunch at Cagneys. Yes, it's pretty skinny, but for a lunch steak it's acceptable. Because of how skinny it was you can't really order it done in a particular way. Well, you can try but they always show up at the table done exactly the same. Believe me, we tried on more than one occasion. Still tasty though. I could go for one right now! However, the steaks served during dinner at Cagneys were well beyond that on the quality meter.

Livemad Posted November 13, 2012 #118 Share Posted November 13, 2012 Did you ever find out what happened to the sick passenger that had to be air lifted out? Was the person alright? I know its probably not something you'd be told but thought I'd ask anyway. I wonder if that type of service is included with the travel insurance? I never used to think of insurance but now that I have a new baby it's all I can do not to worry about her when our Breakaway cruise strolls along next year.:o

I never used to think of insurance but now that I have a new baby it's all I can do not to worry about her when our Breakaway cruise strolls along next year.:o I'll be honest...I did ask Ruth our Concierge, and her reply was that "It is need to know information, and I (meaning herself) don't need to know". I was among a few other Haven guests in the suite hallway watching as they "prepped" the victim in the gurry within the space between the Haven pool and jacuzzi before airlifting from the Haven sundeck. I chose not to take any photos of this out of respect for the patient and their family. It was a very somber moment with several officers including the HD Hugo and many other crew members. You would have to check your travel insurance if something like this is covered or not...Not every policy is the same.

I can say while it's looks were lacking, it was very delicious. We never did try the NY strip (sorry, but we both love the Filet!) at dinner in Cagney's so I can't compare, but this steak was very close to the steak (minus the fries & with veg sides) I had in the MDR when we dined with HD Hugo and other officers.
