If the ship can't make it into Grand Cayman...

When we missed Grand Cayman, we got another sea day. However, when we missed Belize due to hurricane damage, we went to Costa Maya instead. It depends on if there's a port close enough that has room available for another ship.

Usually you get another great day at sea. They will tell you if they have an alternate plan. Grand Caymens is a port that the weather is always an issue although one of my personal favorites you seem to miss it more than any other.

The first two/three times we were scheduled to visit Grand Cayman we missed it due to sea conditions and had an unplanned SEA DAY.

Just off the Legend yesterday and right before our scheduled arrival in Grand Cayman on Friday the captain came on (blaring in the cabins) and informed us that the harbor at Georgetown was closed BUT we would be heading to the opposite side of the island, anchor, and tender in. So, that's what we did. We were going to make it a sea day anyway, this way we just had different scenery (read: no built up town).

Our first scheduled stop of the trip (Cozumel on Tuesday) has us dock at the Downtown Pier rather than Puerta Maya. This occurred, we were told, due to ships being diverted from Puerto Rico to Cozumel.

Not being able to tender to Grand Cayman can happen anytime, even outside of hurricane season. I think whether you get a sea day or go to another port/location depends on how soon they know they cannot tender in, and then whether they can work out the logistics for alternate plans.

We've only sailed to Grand Cayman once, and we ALMOST missed it. Beautiful, clear day, BUT the seas were choppy with strong winds. We waited 2 hours along with another Carnival ship and a Princess ship and we finally headed to an alternate tendering location (Spot's Bay, on the south side of the island). From there, they had complimentary busses taking people to Georgetown.

We were supposed to take an excursion that included renting small speed boats, which unfortunately was cancelled, but we were glad to make it to Grand Cayman! Tendering from a different location was a bit of a logistical challenge, but they got it done!

Just got off the Legend yesterday (10/28/12).

Waves were too high in GC last week; Georgetown harbor was closed.

We went to the other side of the island and anchored on that side; I think it is called Spot Island. Passengers did have to pay to take transportation over to Georgetown.

Water excursions were cancelled. Captain did indicate that he had communicated with island officials and worked on setting up excursions.

We were the only ship in; Legend is a relatively small ship.

This is the first time in 40 years of cruising that I had been on that side of Grand Cayman.

Kudos to the Captain for keeping us well informed on hurricane Sandy.

Legend and its crew are amazing.

Has any one had this happen on the Conquest? Just wondered what they might do??

Depending on :

1> Other ships in port

2> Specific weather/sea conditions

3> Who knows what else

They'll either skip it entirely (most likely) and call it a "sea day" or go to the other side.

It's a problematic port of call as you're basically anchoring out in the ocean (not in any real protected area) and conditions can change. We were there on a Celebrity cruise and were informed when we were tendering in that we'd be leaving earlier than planned due to the afternoon forecast.

Having a private excursion, and needing to leave earlier than planned from Grand Cayman could be a real problem. Usually, Grand Cayman is a beach day for us these days, so no problem.

We always view Grand Cayman as an extra sea day, whether the ship stops there or not. There's not much to do there unless you want to spend the day on a 10 foot wide x 7 mile long rocky beach elbow to elbow with 3,000 - 4,000 not so close friends. And with only one main road, doing any island tour is 2-3 hours of stop and stop again traffic jam (but hey, at least you get to spend an hour or so wandering around an overpriced timeshare resort on your way to hell and back:).

Would you mind filling me in on the bands and type of music they had on board. We will be on her next month.

thanks

I can give you my opinion, if you'd like to hear that.

The guy who plays guitar at the atrium bar is a nice fellow (from Iowa, BTW), but is not the most talented individual (OK/good, but not very good) I would not hang around that bar to listen to him.

The guy who plays periodically in the casino bar is, well... he should not be playing for an audience. I have read reviews about him, and they are dead on. Occasionally in Carnival casinos they at least have a nice soundtrack. On the Legend, that's not even the case - and when that guy plays, they still have some background music playing. A real cacophony of sounds!

The lounge band (often "Music -----" bands on many Carnival ships) is "Best Sellers". They are a four piece group, and have a pretty good sound. Unfortunately, it's geared towards a more mellow crowd. A few times I went by they were playing older standards. I asked if they knew any Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or Journey. Their lead guitarist said "nothing that hard - but we may play some Santana and such". If you are a fan of the "Music" bands, these guys are similar, but with little (make that, no) edge.

We went by the piano bar for 30 seconds - didn't feel like a party place...

Sorry, don't know the answer to your question. We did nothing but relax--read, eat, nap--on this trip.

Husband attended one show.

We were on the Inspiration in Nov/2011 - her last cruise out of Tampa before being taken to her new home port in Long Beach CA. The morning we were supposed to arrive we were informed that it was too windy to tender into Grand Cayman and that we would instead have an extra sea day. What was good though, was we got to Cozumel a lot sooner and had a prolonged port stop there - about 16 hours compared to the usual 8 or 10. So, all in all it was just fine.

Often times in late Nov/early Dec we get these powerful cold fronts that move down through Florida (we are in SW Florida) and if strong enough they can definitely affect conditions down well south of Cuba and the Caymans. When we left Tampa the weather was cold, crappy and foggy, so we weren't too surprised when we couldn't get into GC.

But...not a big deal to us...we just enjoyed the extra sea day and the longer day in Cozumel....

Any chance they would go into Cozumel earlier? The scheduled time is 10am.

Apparently it can be dealt with in many ways:

For our sailing, Grand Cayman was our last stop - so there was no option of getting somewhere else earlier had we skipped it this trip.
