Will I see the pitons from a land tour?

Hi,

We'll be cruising to St Lucia for the first time and really don't want to miss the pitons. I read that the best viewing is from a costal cruise, but we prefer land tours so we can also see the drive-in volcano etc. We're taking Royal Caribbean cruise and below is something they offer (7hr day tour): Has any one taken it? Or anyone who did a similar land tour and still enjoyed the view of the pitons? Comments will be greatly appreciated.

RC excursion SL46-the island's delights

The tour begins in Castries with an overview of the capital city's significant sites. Guests can enjoy a scenic drive along the west coast through the expansive fertile river valleys of Cul De Sac and Roseau. A short stop at Marigot Bay provides and excellent photo opportunity with commanding vistas of the picturesque bay.

The tour continues through the fishing villages of Anse La Raye and Canaries and through the rainforest to arrive at Soufriere and witness the awesome Pitons - a World Heritage Site. Diamond Botanical Gardens beckons with the variety of tropical flowers and plants then on to The Sulphur Springs for an educational tour of the only drive in volcano in the world and the bubbling hot mud pools puffing out steam and strong sulphur smells. Enjoy a typical Creole Buffet Lunch at the end with a panoramic view of the town and bay of Soufriere before returning to the ship.

We just returned from a cruise and we did a shore excursion with James Touring. approx. 6 hrs and one of the best excursions ever!. We saw just about everything, from Castries thru banana plantations etc to Soufriere. Saw the large & small pitons. Treated like his guests from the rum drinks, the hot casaba breads and a fabulous luncheon overlooking the carribean

and of course a swim in the beautiful carribean. James is courteous, very knowledgable and most important a safe driver. His website is:

jamestouringservice.com Have fun. celticnana:)

You will even observe the Pitons, on your arrival and departure from the port!

On some of my Royal Caribbean cruises, the Captain has actually left the port--cruised

along the coast-to the very base of the Pitons! This was a surprise treat. I had an aft cabin at the time, and had stunning 180 degree panoramic views. The most tropical looking islands in the Caribbean, IMO. Lush vegetation, and those Pitons!

If you go on a land tour to the south end of the island, go to the beach in Soufriere. There are several locals with small boats (water Taxis) who will take you out to the Pitons and on the way, you will pass the "bat" caves. Cliffs along the coast full of 1000's of bats (they will be asleep during the day). It is $10/person.

We did a private operated tour with Cosol tours. It was fantastic and much less than the ship tours. We visited the volcano and got to leave a fishing village and arrive at the Pitons by small boat. An hour of beach time before reboarding the speed boat and then the rest of the tour was by land. Check the reviews on tripadvisor. Cosol is wonderful!

That is a very comprehensive tour that really covers the highlights and is very similar to Cosol's tour, James Tour, and other land tour combos. The lunch will either be at Beacon Restaurant or La Haut B&B - both lovely places with amazing views and excellent food. The only thing this tour does not seem to include is a little beach time at the beach between the Pitons - or any beach time really - but it does hit all the highlights of the West Coast and Soufriere, including waterfall, gardens and the volcano.

You should have a great time on it - enjoy!!
