A pilot is someone who knows a specific port very well, comes aboard the cruiseship and helps the crew guide the ship into port safely. He will know all the things about the port that make him invaluable in getting ships in and out safely.

I think virtually all ports require one on board.

If you're out on deck as you come into port you might see them coming alongside.

 

 

Even in the dark and in somewhat rough seas. The pilot in the New Zealand sounds stayed onboard and did some commentary from the bridge as we went through the different areas.
