Lanyards?

We have these and I was thinking of taking them on cruise. However, a co-worker said that on her recent cruise the only ones wearing them were very old people. Will we be "dorky" if we wear these?:confused: (I got them for free, so its not a big deal.)

Lots of passengers wear them of all ages to keep their card with them at all times. You won't look "dorky", trust me! ;)

I use a lanyard, especially when I go ashore. I have a waterproof wallet that I use for my cruise card, personal ID, credit card and cash. It came in pretty handy on my horseback riding adventure in Ocho Rios when we rode into the water - everything was safe (with me) and dry.

I see many people onboard with their cruise cards on lanyards as well.

I use it when I was on board - many times there was no pocket to hold the cruise card and really hate to lug a purse (no matter what size it was) just to keep the card ! thus the lanyard came handy ! (worry free as well - it's on my neck and I won't lose it !)

The first one we bought cost $1.99, then 2.99, and 3.99 last year. So if you have one already, use it .

In my vast experience the people that look dorky in thing, look dorky in anything. The people that wear new things and don't look dorky are the kind that set new fashion trends.

Hi! I ALWAYS take my lanyard with me. I bought a Princess one several years ago, and it is stored in the same place as my passport. On my last cruise, I was with a large group of friends. They all accused me of wearing it only to show off my black "Elite" card. I said that I didnt carry a purse with me, and most of my clothes dont have pockets. I also like to have my pop sticker handy. Well, fast forward to the end of the cruise, most of them had made their way to the gift shop to buy them, and even were complaining about the shops running out of the black!!!

 

You will not look dorky!!! Many people wear them.

I'm not extremely old yet, just old (50's), and I don't care iif it looks dorky. At least I can always find my card, as opposed to lots of the sweet young things who wait in line to get off the ship, then have to go back to their cabins to get their cards.

I was shocked to see how widespread they've been used in the last few years. I would say ignore what the co-worker saids. Bring it and if you feel silly, then don't use it. Better than leaving home and then regretting.

They are the best thing since peanut butter.....never leave home for a cruise without it. We recently just got back from cruising another cruise line and hubby and I were just about the only ones "wearing" them. You would be surprised at how many people (of all ages) stopped us and asked where we got them. I totally agree with everyone elses response so far...it is almost impossible to have it lost or stolen when it is around your neck....besides I wear one every day at work, so it is no big deal....I honestly don't even notice it.

Thanks for the replies. We will take them! When we were in Washington, DC just post 9/11 and using their public transit, I noticed almost all commuters wore them for their govt. jobs. Not a big deal for me. We have worn them to conventions and trade shows in the past. Seems convenient to me.

OK, I have to post again here with a little story! I boarded the Diamond yesterday, and brought my lanyard. One of the first things I do is have my hole punched in it at the Pursers desk. Well, I brought my husbands, and he declined, thinking it looks dorky. WEEEELLLLL, very first thing once onboard, he gets in his pocket for something, and low nd behold, he has dropped his card along the way. HA HA! I wuold have had a great time laughing, except that I needed to help him look for it! We did end up finding it, it had been turned in.

 

Soooo, the moral of the story is, I know where my card is at all times, and the non-lanyards wearers may not! And for the record, my husband is a very assute, logical and careful guy - a brilliant (imho!!!) computer nerd to be exact, so it can happen to anyone!!!!!

Many people wear them for jobs, a lot of kids are now wearing them for ID's in school. Easy to keep track of. If anything, others may be jealous that they didnt think of bringing them.

I bought lanyards for my family of four. Only my 9 year old son and I seem to use them. I like them because we hang our lanyards from the door and NEVER forget them when we leave the room. It's so easy to find them...no looking around the room!

 

My husband is ALWAYS looking for his card and my darling teenage daughter always needs to borrow mine...guess that says it all!!!

 

laurashelby...we bought lanyards for our kids. I don't think they were being given out. I bought mine at Walmart in the area where they sell watches/wallets/purses.

FYI - I am sure this varies ship to ship, but here is what I have found the last few cruises. Last year, the ships would always have red, blue and black, and by the middle of the week black was sold out. When we got onboard on Saturday, they didnt even have any black at all - what few they had, if any, must have been sold immedialty. Then the blue sold out yesterday, and now I have only seen red (which would clash with everything I own!). I keep my black one and reuse it, so it is not a big deal to me - but maybe bring one from home just in case!

We wear the Cruise Critic lanyards. Great way to keep your cruise card handy and also a good conversation piece. Have found lots of other Cruise Critics just by wearing them.

I use one of these (the transparent ID locker) to put my ship card, ID, credit card and a little cash into when I'm getting off the ship but not going beyond the pier. I also use it for my ship card alone when I'm on the ship. I don't know about dorky, but if they are, I'm willing to pay the price to go "hands free."

Hi all!

I felt the same way~dorky, but I like the idea of being hands free, so I decided to buy a few for my next cruise and make them more attractive! Here's what I did: Went to a bead store (with the lanyard so I'd get the right size:rolleyes: ) and got beads large enough to slide over the end and made a pattern that I liked that would "go" with all my outfits! I bought the type of lanyard that opens with a clasp at the back. Now I've gotten creative with colors and patterns etc.

Hmm....I'm the Husband and would like to say it is a good piece of mind to have it around your neck then in your pocket. She only doesn't like it cause of the hole punch which ruins her scrap-booking.

I am a passionate scrapbooker with a different opinion! I think of my hole punch and my coke sticker as "battle scars" showing I actually WENT on a cruise! But I do see her point I guess. Here is what a friend of mine did. On the last night, she made up some excuse about her strip not working for the computer, and got a brand new shiny card.

 

I still like my "used" card (and I am a scrapbooker to the core!) Any little slips of paper or tickets, ect, watch out! I'm takin' them!

I found they are great too for keeping my cruise card in

 

they have a zip pocket and fit just great onto a belt or the straps of my bag

 

even the men dont mind attaching one to a belt

Reading this thread really gave me a chuckle. For our first two cruises we used the stretchy lanyards (dorky personified) available in the casino. Our last one was with 9 family members (9 to 67) so we bought everyone's choice of color in growgrain ribbon lanyards and DD embroidered our nicknames on them. Had lots of compliments on them, they matched most of our outfits and we always knew where they were. As for scrapbooking, we are putting memories together...old and new, so why worry about a hole in a sail and sign. As a previous poster said, it's evidence that I was there.
