emmacruises00 Posted December 20, 2012 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2012 We were on the Carnival Breeze (sailing date 10/02/12) and we missed our first port, Grand Turk. We heard at 6:15 A.M. (from the bridge) that the seas and wind were too rough to dock, and we would have an additional day at sea. We had perfect weather, and very, very calm seas. We had heard that the Breeze had missed many ports in Europe, so we are wondering if the captain is just a little bit scared to dock in any kind of unusual conditions, and that's why the Breeze hasn't docked in so many ports? This was her first sailing to Grand Turk, so we were trying to decide what to make of it. We were also wondering if Holland America's Niew Amsterdam docked that day, because her captain might not be as scared as Breeze's?? Anyone else on this sailing have any comments? This was me 14th cruise, so we kind of know rough seas and all . Also, if anyone knows if the Niew Amsterdam docked, that would help too . We are just curious, there's not anything we can do about it, but it was a big disappointment Thanks! Emma

Rare crewsweeper Posted December 20, 2012 #4 Share Posted December 20, 2012 I think the OP just has a typo. The 12/2/12 6 day sailing after ours did miss GT due to winds. OP you might wonder over to the HAL boards and find reviews there or check their roll call to see if they docked or not. IMO, as much as we enjoy ports and usually pick cruises that have interesting ports or ports we've never been to before, I defer all decisions on whther to miss a port or not to the Captain. It's his primary responsibiility for the safety and security of the ship and its passengers. If he says "NO GO" so be it! GT is essentially a flat island and if the wind direction changes in such a way that the normal leeshore becomes the windward and the direction would push the ship away from or into the pier(depending on which side the ship is assigned) he' has every right to cancel the port. What you may perceive as being light or moderate winds or seas may not be what is actually happening or forecasted to happen later in the day. Two words to remember: Costa Concordia! NHNEV2003 Posted December 20, 2012 #5 Share Posted December 20, 2012 Yep--it is disappointing when you miss a port, but that's the chance you take when you cruise. Last year we missed Grand Cayman, this year we missed St. Thomas. We'll get back to both in due time. ;)
