joyyak Posted June 17, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I saw mention somewhere in a post that a "must" to pack is a fannypack. I am curious if people are still using these? It would sure beat carrying a bag, but I was leaning towards not using one on port calls. Could use some input on this one!! Krazy Kruizers Posted June 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2004 fannypacks Haven't used them in serveral years. In crowded areas you have to careful that someone doesn't have a knife to cut it off quickly. Husband just puts money in deep pocket bermudas that have a a button and velcro strip. I carry a tiny, very light weight purse that i can sling over my shoulder - just to have kleenex, bandaides, stuff like that.
dustyroad Posted June 17, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 17, 2004 i agree about not using the fanny. i stick out a little in the front as it is without one of those glued to my stomach. i have a wonderful weave looking bag ( not straw )that has a long comfortable strap i sling over my chest too. it has a zipper for closing and it carrys all the things i need just fine. my small camera fits in it as well. ejhall Posted June 17, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I use a fanny pack when I vacation/cruise. If you're worried about it being a temptation to a thief, it can go under a shirt or jacket. cruisinqt Posted June 17, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 17, 2004 We always use fanny packs whenever we go on vacation. How could someone cut off the fannypack with a knife without you knowing it or feeling it? I recently saw a show on the travel channel about pickpockets and thieves. It said that over the shoulder purses are easy to pick. The thief reaches in, grabs your wallet and leaves without you ever knowing it. It even showed thieves actually doing that on hidden cameras in Las Vegas. It also showed thieves on hidden cameras stealing from backpacks and large canvas bags. It never showed a thief cutting off a fannypack and stealing it.On the show they said that thieves want to slip in, steal, and then leave without anyone knowing or sounding an alarm. I do believe having someone cut off a fannypack would be felt and the person would be very loud in sounding the alarm. On the show they showed thieves from all over the world stealing on hidden cameras. They even interviewed former thieves who had turned a new leaf. These former thieves recommended the use of fannypacks. We got our fannypacks at Wal-Mart for under $10.00 and they are genuine leather. I don't have a flat stomach either, and I guess it's not that flattering on me. But I am there to have a nice vacation and enjoy myself.I enjoy myself much better without having to lug a heavy purse around all of the time. With a fannypack, I just put in a few essentials and go.And I also feel much safer, too. We vacation several times a year and never leave home without our fannypacks. Enjoy your cruise! klauer Posted June 17, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I usually bring a small shoulder bag that I hold close to my body. There are so many cute purses out there that look a lot better than a fanny pack, IMHO.

CaptData Posted June 17, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I'm disabled and the local police said that it was better to use a fanny pack then a purse. One the pack is in front and is usually closed. Two since it is in front the theft will generally chose an easier target (a purse slung over a shoulder, the longer the strap the better). 3 the only way to remove quickly is to cut it which would set off the alarm which they want to avoid. lougee1043 Posted June 18, 2004 #13 Share Posted June 18, 2004 for really important stuff such as plane tix -passports etc that you dont want to leave on the ship you could also consider wearing a money belt --its under your clothes and no one will get that off you without you noticing lougee1043 Since we last sailed on the Oosterdam til our next cruise on the Galaxy 9/87 HAL - Noordham 10/92 HAL - Westerdam 4/01 HAL - Zaandam 5/02 HAL - Maasdam 8/02 HAL - Zaandam 3/03 HAL -Statendam cancelled due to surgeries 12/03 HAL - Statendam replacement cruise 3/04 HAL Oosterdam 3/05 Celebrity Galaxy
karfest Posted June 18, 2004 #14 Share Posted June 18, 2004 My family laughs at me for wearing the outdated fanny pack- but they are quick to want to put their items in it! It's still the handiest way to haul a few items. Not real stylish but the tourists I see are not exactly off the runways in Milan! I also have a small backpack that comes in handy, but it seems like you could get pick pocketed if not paying attention. Karen

bibb Posted June 18, 2004 #17 Share Posted June 18, 2004 My wife and I both use fanny packs worn in the front. Mine has several zippered pockets and I carry two digital cameras plus spare batteries and memory cards for each of them. I like it best when approaching security areas by taking all the change, keys, pens and whatever out of my pockets and put in the front zipper pocket and send it through the x-ray machines. Be careful with yoour shoulder purse; they are the easiest "snatch and run" bags for pick pockets. In either case, "If an item is one you can't get along without (i.e. passport in a foreign country or all of your cash) don't carry it in any container subject to pick pocketing." If I lose my cameras, I'll be hurt but I can buy more. I'd say, "Go with the fanny pack worn in front and don't worry about what others think." klauer Posted June 19, 2004 #18 Share Posted June 19, 2004 Just a thought -- would you wear a fanny pack walking around your home town? It seems to me that it would clearly identify you as a tourist. Also, the ones I have seen just have a snap together-type closure, which I think would be really easy to unsnap from the back of the waist in an instant (unless you put it though your belt loops, like a poster above suggested). vanclan Posted June 19, 2004 #19 Share Posted June 19, 2004 Fanny Packs rock I use on as my purse every day and I'm certainly not a tourist 365 days/year. sure, most of the time, it is slung over my shoulder like a regular purse--but as soon as security is a concern, and/or I need my hands free-it buckles on and is worn in front. I've lived in third world countries where pick pockets were rampent and never had a problem. A lot of it is just common sense and vigilance. Charlene Posted June 19, 2004 #20 Share Posted June 19, 2004 Another thought If you don't wear a belt that day, you can do what I do, safety pin it to my shorts or capri's that I have on that day. I hide the safety pin under the elastic waist band. That way the thief cannot cut it off of you. mariakitty Posted June 21, 2004 #22 Share Posted June 21, 2004 Nothing says "tourist" more than a fanny pack, but then I've seen some "interesting" purses and packs as well. This is a good time to mention that the word "fanny" is a woman's front bottom in the UK and many other parts of the world, so depending on where you are traveling be prepared for snickers! My husband is from New Zealand and he finds the term fanny pack very funny because it has nothing to do with one's behind in his mind. Poohb Posted June 28, 2004 #25 Share Posted June 28, 2004 Did anyone know that in England a 'fanny' means something else? Some enlish friends of ours told us that they were slightly embarrassed while visiting a beach in the states and someone complained about having sand stuck to their fanny.....In England it's a slang term for vagina.
