Krazy Kruizers Posted January 1, 2013 #27 Share Posted January 1, 2013 Wow, it's unfortunate to hear how the luncheon has diminished over the years, that's too bad. I appreciate everyone's feedback though and I now have a few other questions. What day is the mariner's luncheon usually held on? I was under the impression it was on the day of embarkation but maybe I've misunderstood. Also, if you have sailed before as a guest on a sister cruise line but never on Holland America and attend the luncheon, are you entitled to receive a tile? Thanks so much everyone for your help. We're leaving in just four more days, I'm so excited! :) HAL has 2 events that are too similar in names. On Embarkation day there is a lunch from Noon until 1:30 -- suppose to be for all Mariners. Usually on the last sea day of the cruise there will be at least 2 Mariner BRUNCHES that all those who have sailed on HAL in the past as well as people who have sailed on Princess, Cunard, Carnival, Costa, Seabourn. So many are invited to each one. One is held at 11 AM and the other at 1 PM. Those who are invited to the brunch do get tiles. If you want to make certain that you are on the list to be invited to the Brunch -- check at the front desk.
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 1, 2013 #28 Share Posted January 1, 2013 At the Mariner's Brunch on the recent Amsterdam Panama Canal Cruise, the champagne was already in the glasses on the table when we arrived and there was not a Wine Steward in sight. That is a shame to hear that the Mariner's Brunch has gone down hill even more.
sail7seas Posted January 1, 2013 #29 Share Posted January 1, 2013 Wow, it's unfortunate to hear how the luncheon has diminished over the years, that's too bad. Also, if you have sailed before as a guest on a sister cruise line but never on Holland America and attend the luncheon, are you entitled to receive a tile? Thanks so much everyone for your help. We're leaving in just four more days, I'm so excited! :) There are two Mariners lunchtime events and that becomes confusing if they aren't termed accurately. On the day we board the ship, most of the ships on most cruises have a Mariners Embarkation Lunch in MDR. It is held between 12 noon and 1:30. There is some inconsistency as to who can go as if there are a great many Mariners on a given cruise, there simply are not enough seats to accomodate everyone should all Mariner wish to attend. They sometimes will say the Lunch is limited to Three and Four Star Mariners if that is all they can handle. Of course, the longer the Star Mariner Program is in existence, the more people become Three and Four Star. The other event is a Mariners Society Brunch. That is held on a sea day and all Mariners are invited but for mistakes that have been known to happen from time to time. Everyone who has completed one HAL cruise is a Mariner and is One Star. The tiles are given at the Brunch, for the most part, but rarely might be delivered to the cabin as used to always be done but that has changed. HAL has chosen to say that any person who has completed a cruise on any of the Carnival Family of Ships is considered a One Star Mariner and is welcome at the brunch and will be given a tile. Carnival Family of ships are: Carnival, Seabourn, Costa, Cunard. Holland America and Princess. You can call Mariner Society if you are among that group and ask if you have a Mariners Number. If you do not, ask for one. (800-547-9139) If you really want to go to the Brunch, once aboard go to the Front Office, as mentioned above, and verify you are on the list to be invited. Hope this helps. :)
sail7seas Posted January 1, 2013 #30 Share Posted January 1, 2013 To anticpate what might be the next question....... :) Any days you have sailed on any other Carnival Family ship count only on that cruise line. No days on HAL carry over to other cruise lines and the same is true in reverse.
LeanneLand Posted January 1, 2013 Author #31 Share Posted January 1, 2013 Thanks, everyone for the help. I didn't realize there were two lunches or events, and the one I was reading on their website was the embarkation lunch. I can see now how that can be easily confused with the mariners brunch. :o We'll be sure to check in with the front desk when we board. Happy New Year, everyone! BrianC-80 Posted January 20, 2013 #32 Share Posted January 20, 2013 I have a question about this. Do you have to attend the mariners lunch in order to receive a tile? Or can it be requested after boarding? This is my second time returning on a HAL cruise, and I'm excited to start my tile collection. Thanks! Thanks for asking this, we're in a similar situation and I was wondering about it myself!
sail7seas Posted January 20, 2013 #33 Share Posted January 20, 2013 If you miss the brunch, go to the front office and ask for a tile. :)
luv2cruisenz Posted January 20, 2013 #34 Share Posted January 20, 2013 If you are on a collectors cruise do you get a tile for each segment or just one tile? Thanks.
solocanadian Posted January 20, 2013 #35 Share Posted January 20, 2013 And the tiles may be handed out at the tables during the Mariner's Brunch! ;) I have also seen the tiles stacked on tables just inside the MDR so one could, if so desired, help themselves to more than one tile! I don't think they are stacked there for that purpose - not a nice thing to do.:(
sail7seas Posted January 20, 2013 #36 Share Posted January 20, 2013 If you are on a collectors cruise do you get a tile for each segment or just one tile? Thanks. There has been some coversation that some people some months ago were only being invited to one Mariners Brunch on a Collectors cruise. We were told that will not happen anymore. We have been invited to Mariners Brunch both weeks when on a Collectors....... It might be because we are high number of days though. My experience is that you will be able to have one tile for each segment.
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 20, 2013 #37 Share Posted January 20, 2013 If you are on a collectors cruise do you get a tile for each segment or just one tile? Thanks. We have not gotten tiles for both segments. And we have done quite a few Collector's cruises.
sail7seas Posted January 20, 2013 #38 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Have you never been invited to both Mariners Brunches?

It might be because we are high number of days though. My experience is that you will be able to have one tile for each segment. We were not invited to the first Mariner awards ceremony on the Noordam and not invited to the Mariner's brunch -- and we are high number days as well. On the Maasdam we were invited to the first Mariner awards ceremony but it was not held right before the lunch -- it was after our dinner one evening. But again we were not invited to the Mariners lunch. And of course we are high number days.
sail7seas Posted January 20, 2013 #40 Share Posted January 20, 2013 We had a great Mariners Cocktail Party on Maasdam in the evening in Crows Nest and Medallions were presented. It would have been for your after dinner drinks and our cocktail hour as we do late dining. That was one of the best Mariners Parties we had in ages. Speak with the Concierge if you wish to go to the Mariners brunch and do not receive the invitation. We have been told that high Mariners are supposed to be invited to both if they are on a Collectors.
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 20, 2013 #41 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Ours was in the Hudson and Half Moon Rooms as there were not a lot of us. We don't have any Collector's Cruises booked -- so it will not be a problem.
luv2cruisenz Posted January 20, 2013 #42 Share Posted January 20, 2013 We just did a collectors in December and we were invited to the Mariners brunch on each segment and an awards ceremony. Couldn't go to the second brunch and asked for the tile to be sent to the cabin but this didn't happen. I didn't like to ask again in case you are only allowed one (like the bags, only got one of those as well). I'll know for next time! Thanks. mkam2821 Posted January 20, 2013 #43 Share Posted January 20, 2013 No, you can go to the front desk, tell them your not planning on attending the Mariners lunch but would like to have your tiles. They should be delivered to your stateroom before the end of the cruise. Didn't go to the mariner's lunch, and thought that they just stopped giving out the tiles (we cruised on the NA in December but it was our first time back on HAL after a severall year hiaturs). They used to just arrive in our stateroom and when they didn't I figured another tradition gone.
