TamaLee Posted April 2, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2004 First off let me say that the people were very friendly and we don't even speak French. A simple smile hello and how are you went a long way. Even a Bonjour was a welcome attempt at the language. We were going to rent a car but after inquiring at the Tourism office found out that the car rental places were about a 15 minute cab ride away. So off we went. As we left the port area we were bombarded by taxi drivers wanting to take us on tours. So we thought this would be easier. Good thing we went this route. The roads in Martinique are very narrow and windy and traffic is very bad in the city. The taxi tour was $35 per person and there were 6 of us in a van. The drive will take you where ever you want to go. We had a great tour of the island. I only told the driver we wanted to see Mt. Pele and St. Pierre but we saw so much more. Are driver spoke very good english and it seemed like a lot of the drivers did. We drove by several black sand beaches but would not recommend them to anyone. They were just narrow strips of sand right next to the road with no services. Let me know if you have any questions. ber019 Posted April 23, 2005 #6 Share Posted April 23, 2005 hi, how long does it take to o from fort-de-france to saint piere? what's the opening times for the rum destilleries, for example neisson? thanks michael
pomliane Posted April 26, 2005 #7 Share Posted April 26, 2005 if your rent a cab or rent a car driving on your own, it's about 25 or 30 min between Fort-de-France and Carbet (where distillery Neisson is situated). Usually, distilleries open at 9am. it's now the period when they cut sugarcane and it's very interesting to learn how they make rhum. You can also visit Distillery Depaz in St Pierre. But be carefull, don't drink and drive!!!:D
