3dog Posted February 13, 2013 #101 Share Posted February 13, 2013 The current ships doing Alaska go to Australia for the winter and don't go through the canal. Voyager and Mariner are, or will be, in that hemisphere and could easily do Alaska cruises without needing a canal transit. Though true that RCL's current ships are doing Asia and a trans-pacific, previously they, and most Alaska-bound cruise ships, do a Panama Canal and Pacific Coast trip to get to Alaska. Radiance and Rhapsody can also be moved to the Caribbean through Panama after an Alaska season, whereas the larger RCI ships cannot. Voyager and Mariner will likely never do Alaska, as not only are they large for the area, they do not meet the environmental requirements (which are only getting stricter). And after arriving, their only option is to go back through Asia/Australia, or around Cape Horn (at least till the Panama Canal upgrade). I could see Voyager class ships doing Panama Canal and Pacific coast runs after the Panama Canal upgrade.

As previously noted, though they can get there, they are not allowed in the fjords and channels of the inside passage. Otherwise, Mariner might have remained on the west coast, as it could have done a Mexican route in the winter and Alaskan in the Summer.
Topo Gigio Posted February 13, 2013 #103 Share Posted February 13, 2013 I was told by the Adventure's concierge that the AOS is probably moving to Florida after the 2014 refurbishment. Disney Cruise Line announced yesterday that the Magic is going to homeport from San Juan in 2014. I'm not going to play the chess game, but I'm allowed to dream :) And most of us agree that the Southern Caribbean is the best!! First cruise after dry dock is from April 13-20 out of Miami to the Eastern Caribbean. My guess is that on the 20th she will do a TA to Europe. Maraprince Posted February 13, 2013 #104 Share Posted February 13, 2013 In the spring of 2006, the BLRA enters into a 35-year, $140 million agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, ie Cape Liberty. I highly doubt that RCCl will be going back to Manhattan. While RCCI may not be going back to Manhattan, they at least should consider building another pier in Bayonne as it was mentioned. Now, there is only the one pier with both Celebrity and RCCI using it on different days. The space and capacity are there for 2 piers and upgrades to the existing terminal as well. The bus to the ship needs to go away! It takes longer to load and unload the buses with people jumping the lines than the ride to the ship. FIRELT5 Posted February 13, 2013 Author #105 Share Posted February 13, 2013 The "Sunshine" or Quantum Of The Seas just recently appeared on the St. Maarten Cruise schedule which extends out to May Of 2015. The First port of call for the "SunShine" is 12-5-14 followed by other monthly or bi-monthly calls until 4-17-15 with a calling time of 12:15 to 2000. May of 2015 brings the "Sunshine" into St. Maarteen on Mondays 5-11-15, 5-25-15 (The current EXOS 9night Bermuda/Carribean Itin) The time is a dead giveaway since it's a long sail from Bermuda (1st port of call on Saturday) to St. Maarteen on Monday ???? http://201.220.14.27/sxmonline/VesselScheduleCruise.aspx It does appear that our "Sunshine" has been changed to the Quantum of the Seas by the St. Maarten Port Authority :) Sorry CCL Sunshine Lovers, lol. Voyager and Mariner are, or will be, in that hemisphere and could easily do Alaska cruises without needing a canal transit. Another reason why a Voyager class ship would probably not do Alaska cruises is the fact that the solarium is not enclosed. The air in Alaska can be quite chilly, so then no pools could be used. Any ship that RCCL uses in Alaska currently and in the past have had the glass domed solariums.

mjldvlks Posted February 13, 2013 #110 Share Posted February 13, 2013 OK super-sleuths. Quantum visits, uh is scheduled to visit St Maarten irregularly beginning December 5, 2014 until May 11, 2015 with as few as 11 and as many as 44 days between visits and visits falling on Fridays except for Thursday Jan 29, 2015 and Monday Feb 9 and visits lasting from 8 or 9 am to 5 or 6 pm except for Friday April 17, 2015 where the visit is from 12:15 to 8 pm. Beginning May 11, 2015 she falls into a regular schedule of calling on Monday every two weeks with time in port from 12:15 to 8 pm until August 31. After that, there is only one call, 15 days later on Tuesday September 15, 2015 from 7:15 am to 6 pm. After that, there is only on call schedule to the port and that is by Celebrity Summit later in the fall. I interpret that as incompleteness rather than meaning there really are no calls. So, mystery hounds, what do we make of this? Here is my suggestion: Quantum is delivered from the builder in December and spends the Spring doing an irregular "show her off" schedule sailing to and from various ports. Beginning in May she settles down to her regular schedule for the Summer. We don't know where she is sailing from, but Bayonne makes sense based on matching the time in port with previous Bayonne cruises. Then in September she takes off for somewhere else: Canada/New England? Europe for a Winter schedule to take advantage of her particular design features? Any other suggestions/speculation? Ain't this fun?

Ain't this fun? I actually like speculation, provided that the intent is to speculate. One of the speculations (not necessarily the ones below) may actually happen, so I'll bite (not that I haven't already). The stop in SXM is already part of the EOS current itinerary, so there is the likelihood that RCI desires to retain this route. So, The obvious to my lead-in: They are considering several ships, though it may well be EOS, they put in QOS so as to be as flexible as possible. Could be that the entry is wishful thinking on the port's part (RCI: "Were thinking about this, can the port handle QOS as instead of EOS", SXM: "We'll put it on the schedule!") RCI is trying to mess with us (RCI: "Hmm, we know it will not be QOS, but if we request SXM, those CC members will assume, and we will show them when we put it somewhere else") The inverse of the previous (RCI: "If you had been reading CC, you would have known where it was going"). Maximize the port to minimize load to minimize other visits (RCI: "We can only put in actual ships, and since QOS is large it will push a port limit so that other ships that visit will not have as many crowds") Throw off the competition (RCI: "We have to consider itineraries, so let's request a number so that our competitors don't know till the last minute"). Including: This is the plan, CC just sleuthed it quickly.I may think of more, others on CC will doubtlessly add their own.

Topo Gigio Posted February 14, 2013 #115 Share Posted February 14, 2013 The ship will call on Fridays at St.Maarten which is another reason to believe that she will not be homeported in Florida because it takes 2 sea days to reach there unless she is doing longer than 10 days cruises which I don't believe. FIRELT5 Posted February 14, 2013 Author #116 Share Posted February 14, 2013 The Exos will be entering DryDock at around 11/28/14 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=256922&d=1357842796 My predictions are the QOS will homeport in Bayonne in Mid-November 2014 (depending on her construction time table) and will sail a series of 7-12 night voyages to the Bahamas, eastern Caribbean & Southern Caribbean voyages until late April or early May 2015 When She will start Her 9 day Thursday/Saturday Bermuda/Eastern Caribbean Cruises. She will also do the rotating 5 day Bermuda cruises from Sat to Thursday. These ITIN'S will run into The end of August 2015 and The QOS will do a series of 7,10, 11 night voyages to Canada in September 2015 followed by 7nt voyages to Bermuda for October 2015. The Fall of 2015 would bring back the 7-12 nt voyages to the Bahamas & Caribbean.
JAMESCC Posted February 14, 2013 #117 Share Posted February 14, 2013 I agree with FIRELT5, the evidence is pretty overwhelming at this point starting with her being constructed for cooler weather. And may I say SIGN ME UP for QOS to Canada/NE! Best cruise I was ever on, most fun ever. We absolutely loved it, and want to do it again. I also have to say I am just a bit tired of people from Florida trying to hog up every single ship. You have 500 ships, you get new ships every single year, can anyone else have just one? This guy confirms a lot of what you are saying. http://www.******************.com/2013/02/12/could-quantum-seas-be-sailing-out-port-liberty-new-jersey I'm still not totally buying it. Bayonne can't handle a larger number of passengers with it's current configuration. A new terminal will get built, but when? Having said all that. One thing that was said about Oasis OTS was that it really didn't need any ports. Quantum class is probably a weatherized version of Oasis class? If both of those are true, it makes sense for Cape Liberty, since a trip down to San Juan takes 72 hours. Quantum class makes sense for cruises with lots of at-sea days out of a port with cold weather.

The double occupany figure for Voyager class ships is 3114. The number you gave is the maximum capacity. I have not seen a definitive statement whether the 4100 projected capacity for the Quantum class ships is DO or maximum capacity. Since it is the only number given out, I am guessing it is the DO number. If it is DO, the Maximum capacity could be 4800 or more.

December would be great because we usually sail for my husbands Dec birthday. In 2014 he will celebrate his 80th. How wonderful that will be. We are in the Winter of our years and want to make the best of it. Take care Irene & Miles
