When do you request an egg crate mattress?

I saw mention in someone's post that they forgot to ask for an egg crate mattress when they could. Do you need to request this when you make your reservation? Or when you first meet your cabin steward?

When you meet your room steward just ask for the egg crate. I asked for one on the Sky and it took my room steward a minute or two to figure out what I was talking about.

What is an egg crate mattress?

On the Gem, as we were disembarking, I noticed a room steward handling a wooden board that goes under the mattress. If you need even more support, you might try asking if they have a board for you.

Bed boards, bed extensions and rails as well as extra pillows can be requested ahead of time through your travel agent.

 

An egg crate is a foam rubber mattress topper that makes the bed more comfortable. I have never requested one on NCL but always do on Princess as their beds are rock hard.
