getting into town

The ferry runs when the bridge is open

This is correct and timewise it's quicker to walk over the bridge. The walk to the ferry is a little longer (depending where you dock) and you have to wait for the ferry.

To walk from one side of the bridge to the other, at a normal pace, takes under five minutes.

The ferry is right beside the bridge but only operates when the bridge is open. Once the ferry starts boarding everyone, fills up, rides across and opens up for people to leave is about 7 minutes depending how fast everyone gets on and off. :)
