Sun - Smoking Question

Lovex4

Recommended Posts

We're sailing the Sun this fall and have port side balcony cabin 9042. This is our first balcony cabin.

I am allergic to cigarette smoke and am wondering about other's perspective regarding any annoyance of smoke either in the cabin air system (from casino etc) or balcony (from adjoining balconies or the port side pool deck smoking area). I know that smoking is allowed on balconies but I would hope that sailing the smoke would disipate quickly and I could enjoy the balcony. Has anyone had a smoker on the balcony upwind and experiened any persistent smell?

The further forward you are the less smoke as it flows back toward the aft as the ship is moving. I never have smelled smoke from the air system. I would try to move to a forward cabin as yours is mid and you may experience smoke.

Such a pet peeve of mine. We are on the Sun in a balcony cabin (I think 9220) in October - I'm hoping we are not surrounded by smokers. My husband has been smoke free for 5 months now. It drove me insane when he was a smoker and I always had headaches. I'd be so disappointed if we were surrounded by smokers. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

I wish they had non-smoking balcony areas, as I will no longer book a balcony. On our last cruise, with smokers on either side of us, we were lucky to sneak even a few minutes in a day to enjoy the balcony. Plus they must have smoked on the balcony with the cabin door open, as every morning our cabin was very strong with smoke. I am allergic and it was very unpleasant and my family was bothered by it as well. A few years ago we had a balcony with no smokers and it was great. But the only way I can guarantee not smelling smoke all the time is to not have a balcony, so that is what we now do.

Wife an I are sailing on the Pride of America Mid-ship balcony Deck 10. We are hoping we are surrounded by smokers for a change so we don't have to hear the non-smokers whine like babies !! The balconies are on the outside, if you don't want to smell smoke stay at home and smell yourself.

We were on the Sun portside balcony. Unfortunately it will really depend on whether you have a smoker nearby. I can say there were smokers on the pool deck but the area was so open and breezy it did not bother us a bit, even when we sat in the smoking area.

The casino, on the other hand, was horrible. If you are allergic go up or down to travel from one end to the other. Do not even try to walk by the casino.

Hope that helps, and hopefully this won't turn into a nasty thread. It is a legitimate question and there is no need for any smokers to take offense at someone who does have breathing issues or allergies when they just want information.

Since most cruise lines have now banned smoking in cabins the balcony cabins have become the smokers "Haven" so they can smoke without having to leave their cabin to go to an open deck.

Our last cruise on HAL the balcony just forward of ours had 2 chain smokers who spent their waking time smoking on their balcony making using ours impossible as I am also allergic to cigarette smoke. My wife and I enjoy eating room service breakfast on our balcony but the inconsiderate chain smokers next to us ruined this experience on that cruise. When the ship is moving most of the time the smoke from the forward cabins will blow into your balcony, when the ship is in port it will all depend which way the wind is blowing. Unfortunately, I think it will take a catastrophic fire as a result of a lit cigarette on board a cruise ship before the industry finally bans smoking on balconies and limits all smoking to limited controlled areas on cruise ships. Limiting smoking to balconies on just one side of the ship is a good compromise but the smokers will fight to their last breath to stop even that sensible solution.

I think smokers would love if cruise lines would have balconies on one side for them & balconies on other side for non smokers............but which would it be??? Port or starboard??? And non smokers would complain that they couldn't get a balcony on that side..........There are many cruise lines that don't allow smoking on balcony...........that is where I would go!!:)

I too am allergic to cigarette smoke and get bronchitis from it. Can't say about the Sun but have sailed twice on NCL Star mid-ship and did not experience any smoke issue in cabins but definitely on balcony. The smoke does not dissipate - it will blow at you from above, below and beside you. We choose a balcony because I have to have a window or door that will open so I don't feel claustrophobic. We find we spend very little time on a balcony - sometimes it's just too windy to be out there anyway. We avoid the casino and go to a deck above or below to get to the other side! It is frustrating, especially when you would like to sit outside but at least we know what to expect. (Yes, we could go on another cruise line that is balcony no smoking but we like NCL.) However, we have not been on the Star since it was revamped so it may be different now.

I think many people have suggested to NCL (me being one of them) that they have one side of the ship for balcony smoking and the other side smoke free. There would still be complaints from both sides of the smoking issue but at least it would give us all an opportunity to share space more comfortably. It must be as frustrating for considerate smokers who want a quiet "smoke" on their balcony knowing there are those of us who wish they wouldn't. NCL may be surprised with how quickly they sell out of the non-smoking side.

We did a 14 day cruise on HAL before they stopped smoking in cabins and we could smell smoke in our cabin and cabin hallways except for mid-way during the cruise when some passengers disembarked and the ship was thoroughly cleaned for the new passengers coming on board. They must have run some extractor fans that weren't run any other times! We had thought they would have good ventilation like the Star did but alas not! We were in a forward balcony pretty close to the front and balcony smoke was an issue there too.

We will be on NCL Jewel next and are hoping the ventilation is as good as the Star was.
