Last fall we rented a car from Hertz for the day. Office is just down the street from the train station. Cost all in was aprox. 60 euros. (Insurance, taxes etc.)

Had a great time touring the area, stopping for lunch and various side trips.

There are probably organized tours, but for the cost we saw what we wanted, on our schedule. Took a GPS with local maps down-loaded from Garmin, but Hertz had units for rent. They gave us some basic ideas of what to see and we customized a route to suit us. Roads well marked and no insane drivers.

Just an option if you have a little spirit of adventure.

The private companies will meet you in Civi - no problem and there's lots of things to do besides go to Rome - Etruscan ruins for one. A bit of looking at the ports boards and even looking at Hal's different tours will give you a good idea.:D Lots of wonderful things to see and beautiful country close by:D

We did a ship's tour out into the countryside from Civitavecchia. Part of the tour was to a resort/spa set in a farm that had vineyards and olive groves. We got to taste their products while we sat on an awning-covered verandah surrounded by lovely peaceful scenery. It was a nice alternative to the more hectic pace of a tour to Rome.

This was through Cunard, so HAL might offer something similar. Or you could look for a tour company that does wine-tasting tours.

We took the same cruise last year and booked a tour to Tivoli to visit the two villas there.. one of our best excursions ever. Another option is to visit Ostia Antica. Both of these are accessible from Civitavecchia and a possibility would be to visit them on your way to Rome unless you are returning to Civitavecchia. In that case I would hire a local transfer company rather than one that has to come from Rome to pick you up.

When we had one day in Civi a couple of years ago, and didn't want to go to Rome, we took a HAL shorex that took us to Castelgandolfo, some catacombs and a lunch and pasta-making demonstration at an "agrotourismo" farm/restaurant. It was a nice day.

In that case you can't go wrong by visiting Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este in Tivoli. Google Tivoli and see what I mean.

We had a wonderful tour of the Etruscan tombs, incredible museum in Tarquinia, and a splendid luncheon in a tiny village. The countryside was so peaceful. A great day. We hired Romeinlimo for this and several tours.
