Check in when there is an overnight?

I am in the early planning stage for the 21 day South America/Antarctica for January 2014 on Zaandam. I want to know what time you can embark for a cruise that doesn't leave until 6 PM the next day. We will be arriving in Buenos Aires on 1/28 and check in is 1/29 at 1 PM. Can we spend the day (on the 29th) on a tour and arrive to the ship at approximately 4 PM? Are there people still there to check passengers in?

Yes, you can board anytime before the muster drill, which will be about 45 minutes before sailing on the 30th. When we did an overnight first night in Venice people were still arriving to board at 8:00 pm of embarkation day. I believe they were escorted to the front desk to be checked in and get their key cards.

As mentioned anytime should be fine. When we overnight in Quebec City there were people boarding/checking in until a couple hours before departure.

You should check with HAL in advance to be sure. You wil want them to know you are coming, and approximately when.

In Buenos Aires, there is a shuttle from the terminal to the ship; no walking in the port area is allowed (and it's too far anyway). You need to know that the shuttle is still running. (It should be, since passengers will be coming and going). The luggage screening workers need to be on duty, or other arrangements made.

This is a fantastic cruise! I have done it three times, and still love it.

Thanks to everyone for your input about my question. I would like to spend embarkation day at the ranch area (Pampas) which is supposedly an 8 hour excursion. The only full day we have is that day, so that is why I asked.

Ruth, I have seen through the years all of your great cruises. We are thrilled to be able to have time to do this one to celebrate my hubby's 50th birthday.

We have before not checked in until the second day. As long as you are there before gangway up/muster you are fine. HAL can get you that time, too. Usually 1:30 or so from sailing.
