SLKB Posted March 30, 2013 #1 Share Posted March 30, 2013 I can find plenty of advice on tours, DIY tours, etc. for Copenhagen, Gdansk, Oslo, Helsinki and St. Petersburg, but not much on Ystad, Sweden and Klaipeda, Lithuania. We usually look for something on our own before choosing a ship's tour. Are HAL's tours my best bet for these two ports? Art and architecture are our interests. Desdichado62 Posted March 30, 2013 #2 Share Posted March 30, 2013 Ystad is quite small and I don't know how much there is to see/do for tourists. However Smygehuk (southern most point of Sweden) is some 30km west of Ystad. At Smygehuk you can see a statue of actress Uma Thurman's grandmother. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smygehuk You will also have a Picturesque fishing village just east of Ystad called Kåseberga. Above this village there is on old megalithic monument called Ale's stenar. http://www.ystad.se/ystadweb.nsf/AllDocuments/F08515217415AEA7C1257302003CC6D7 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ale%27s_Stones http://www.ystad.se/ystadweb.nsf/alldocuments/878FB67C58EB6F67C1256E1D0050B91C
Danish viking Posted March 30, 2013 #3 Share Posted March 30, 2013 Isn't Ystad most know for the crime novels about Wallander and ferries to Poland and the danish island Bornholm. Perhaps there are some Wallander inspired tours or something.
tsavorite Posted March 31, 2013 #4 Share Posted March 31, 2013 Klaipeda is a charming little town. There is not much there, apart from some pretty old buildings, a craft market if you are lucky, and a sculpture trail, which has some interesting sculptures and takes you all around the old bit of town. If the weather is good (and it was when we visited), then it is a very pleasant wander. Ship's tours went out onto the great sandspit, but we were quite happy folowing the trail. SLKB Posted March 31, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted March 31, 2013 Thank you for the suggestions. Ale's stenar is something that my husband will definitely enjoy. I like the idea of just wandering in Klaipeda. So many times I feel as if we miss out on the chance to just view local life by running around to see the "must sees". On a clear day with dry air it could be possible to see the Danish Island Bornholm in the distance. The only problem is getting there since there does not seem to be any bus going there. Perhaps you could contact Ystad tourist info and ask them: turistinfo@ystad.se
