magroo Posted April 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2013 We are on the Riviera this summer that ends in Venice. We can stay on the ship overnight, so technically it's 2 days in Venice. OK...here comes the Oceania newbie question...how late does the ship have someone available for us to board after our day of touring Venice? We want to do an evening walking tour/gondola ride. Jim and Stan?? Anyone?? Thanks!!
Kissing Seahorses Posted April 3, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Overnights in port are when the security folks earn their pay, there will be a guard at the door on a 24 hour basis. It is likely that many of the crew will be out much later than you will be.
CintiPam Posted April 3, 2013 #3 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Whatever you do that evening, be sure to visit St. Mark's Square and enjoy the wonderful live music played by the two orchestras from the competing cafes there. Simply magical!

JimandStan Posted April 3, 2013 #5 Share Posted April 3, 2013 We are on the Riviera this summer that ends in Venice. We can stay on the ship overnight, so technically it's 2 days in Venice. OK...here comes the Oceania newbie question...how late does the ship have someone available for us to board after our day of touring Venice? We want to do an evening walking tour/gondola ride. Jim and Stan?? Anyone??Thanks!! The first thing to consider is that the Maritime Station is a HUGE Complex, which is technically "in" Venice, but somewhat removed from the main Tourist Areas: On our last trip to Venice (also on the Riviera) the ship changed berths during her stay there, so be sure, before leaving the ship, that you confirm where the Riviera will be at the time when you plan to RETURN as extensive Customs barriers divide the port into isolated sections for each Berth. If you are doing a custom Gondola tour, you may want to ask the Gondolier to end somewhere near the Law University of Venice, as the three mile walk northwards (through old-town) from that location is charming, romantic, utterly scenic, and will lead you back to the Piazalle Roma, where you will catch the People Mover that you must take in order to return to the entrance of the Maritime Station: The People Mover Station, at the Port is still at least a half a mile from any of the Cruise Ship Berth entrances, in an area that is humming by day but fairly desolate after dark. I would not say that it is dangerous, but much of it is still unpaved, and much of it is not well lit. Oceania will provide a shuttle from the People Mover back to the ship, but you must know where the pick up point will be, and how often the shuttle will be running as this is usually a one vehicle operation (particularly at off-hours). Be sure to ASK before you leave the ship and (Trust me) you want to write this information down. Something about extended sensory stimulous (i.e. sightseeing) effects fact retention. Others have already told you that the gangway will be open 24/7 during the Riviera's stay in Venice, which is true. Hope that this helped, enjoy your cruise, and enjoy exquisite Venice! magroo Posted April 3, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Jim & Stan- Thanks for the maps and the additional info. I'm a "visual" person, so seeing the area truly helps.

magroo Posted April 3, 2013 Author #8 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Stay post cruise in Venice if you can. Well worht the time and cost. Definitely gonna do this. We've booked a hotel for an additional night so that we have 2 full days there. Wish we could do more, but I can optimize the time we do have. Hawaiidan Posted April 4, 2013 #9 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Taking the water taxi into town... forget walking a long way... Steer clear of the area around the central station after dark. Its almost 1/2 mile from the pier to the port entrance.... and yes pier/ship open 24/7 Hotels.. the Regina is outstanding, expensive but has its own water taxi to the airport.... pretty cool. 2 blocks from St Marks and on the Grand Canal
Blowfish333 Posted April 10, 2013 #10 Share Posted April 10, 2013 Agree with the suggestion to visit San Marco's in the evening, but remember if you sit down at one of the cafe's with music, you will be charge a very high rate on top of whatever you drink or eat. this is standard everywhere in Italy, but especially expensive at San Marco's because of the orchestras. Another fun thing to do in the evenings, is to take the Vaporettos all around the city, because they are never too busy at night and you can usually get the seats right in the front if you're fast on. Very romantic. Do make sure do stay on for a couple of extra days if you can at the end. We always go early and stay late when we do 2 week Oceania cruises, never doing less than a month trip.
