Rare many cruises Posted April 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 11, 2013 We are concerned about the higher levels of rainfall in January in Tahiti. For those who have cruises to Tahiti in January before, can we expect rain showers or heavy rain throughout most of the day? Unfortunately, cruising to Tahiti in January works best for our schedule. Please help! :):)
Wendy The Wanderer Posted April 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 11, 2013 Haven't been there in January but was there in December once, and in mid-April. In December it rained once or twice, that's all. That whole season (their summer) is hotter and more humid, and rainier than the rest of the year. You can see average temps and rainfall here: http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/FPXX0001 as you can see rainfall goes down sharply in (our) summer. But it can rain any time, and tropical downpours are not uncommon. Overall the weather will still be great, I just wouldn't count on doing hikes in the jungle. The ship remains very comfortable even in the heat.
Hawaiidan Posted April 11, 2013 #3 Share Posted April 11, 2013 From experience there can be regular heavy downpours of up to 2-3 inches per hour rate that last a short time. Afterwards I will be very humid. Mornings before 11 am usually clear till the sun heats things up. Sort of like Florida except no lightning or thunder just huge T cells Eastern sides of islands will get more rain than western facing due to trade winds. November/early December are pretty good Jan to early March is the monsoon time. Long term rain will be rare. Short intense every afternoon and early evening the rule
vaitape Posted April 11, 2013 #4 Share Posted April 11, 2013 Hot and humid and cyclone season. Jan is not the most reliable time to escape rain but then, who knows what the weather do. For instance, last July (which is normally the dry season), it rained almost everyday for 3 weeks....not just showers with clearing but downpours.....heaps of water from the sky! Unusual but it happens. If that's the only time of year you can go, go. Chances are it will be sunny most of the day with some rain at night. What is for certain is it will be hot and humid. weluvcruisin' Posted April 11, 2013 #5 Share Posted April 11, 2013 We were there in January 4 years ago and the weather was sunny and hot, didn't rain at all, enjoyed every minute. As others have said it all depends, it's really luck of the draw it is the rainy season.
spindrift Posted April 11, 2013 #6 Share Posted April 11, 2013 We were there in February and we had a lot of rain. Not enough to dampen our trip tho. Eased up heading toward Auckland.
airheadfan Posted April 11, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 11, 2013 We were on the Marina from Valparaiso to Papeete this past December/January and it began getting rainy in Bora Bora, it rained in Moorea and we had rain for part of every day for the three days we stayed on Tahiti. At times the rain was torrential, while at other times it was just a drizzle. Still plenty of sun, but when it rained it came down by buckets rather than drops. Did not spoil our time at any of the locations as it did not last all day long.
Paulchili Posted April 11, 2013 #8 Share Posted April 11, 2013 Unfortunately, the rain can be a deal breaker, especially in Bora Bora. On a sunny day it is an unparalleled paradise with the lagoon every shade of green and blue; on a rainy day it's just another island - nothing more. Hope for the former :)
no fuss travel Posted April 12, 2013 #9 Share Posted April 12, 2013 It rained at noon for about 10 minutes and then rained in the evening between 7:30 and 8:30 for 10 minutes. Torrential downpour, but the rest of the time it was cloudy with some sun. After the rain, very humid. That was from February 4th to 7th this year. We heard that the previous week it rained all week. The cruise that went around the Tahitian Islands before we boarded had rain every day so it is hard to say what the weather may be like.
mvkor Posted April 17, 2013 #11 Share Posted April 17, 2013 Been there in January - did non notice any rains at all. I think it is a matter of luck - you can not predict the weather.
Hawaiidan Posted April 19, 2013 #12 Share Posted April 19, 2013 Been there in January - did non notice any rains at all. I think it is a matter of luck - you can not predict the weather. Dec to end of March, in the south and central pacific its cyclone season and between 20 drgrees N and 20 South its very predictable.... so much so that insurance companies require small craft to be out of the region or taken out of the water. Too the region is experiencing a new climate pattern ,with less frequent storms but if higher intensity. ( that a NOAA official deal) Just prepare for sticky high humidity. rogfam Posted April 20, 2013 #13 Share Posted April 20, 2013 I had the same concerns and decided to book in Jan.today anyway. Figured it was a crap shoot, but worth the gamble.
