Alaska Inside Passage - Where does the ship go?

This is going to sound like a strange question, but on an Alaska Inside Passage cruise, where does the ship sail at night?

 

We are sailing on Solstice on the 05/17 Tracy Arm Fjord 7-night cruise. I was wondering where the ship goes after port? Does it sail out to sea and then sail back into the straits? Or does sail slowly to the next port?

I think the answer to your question is yes....they do both. At reduced speed, they go to sea for the night and then dock the next day...but of course that depends on the weather.

I do not think it is exactly like the map shows. I believe they stay to the west side of Vancouver Island on the way back south to Victoria. Also, coming out of Skagway, they stay inside the islands more.
