Flo71 Posted May 4, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2013 I know most things will go on my shipboard account just wondering if I will need cash for some things. I am from the UK and it will be a cruise to Norway, so I will get some currency for Norway but am wondering if I need to get dollars for the ship? Will I need cash for the casino? Will probably play some roulette maybe slots too? Do they charge chips to your account or do you draw cash off your shipboard account? Thanks, Flo x
DebbieMacG Posted May 4, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 4, 2013 The casino is the only place onboard you will need cash unless you tip a couple of extra dollars or euros when you get room service or to someone who gives you excellent service over and above the norm! :)
simon stingray Posted May 4, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 4, 2013 You can get cash from the casino cashier (charged to your onboard account) but there is a 5% charge. The only other time we have used cash onboard was to give a small tip when room service or breakfast is delivered to our stateroom.

You must bring extra cash for this? I don't use the casino but my husband plays poker A LOT while cruising. Just checking on which way to account for this...separate cash or on board account. We are new to Celebrity so not sure how their casinos work. Didn't think to ask until I saw this. deelastcre Posted May 4, 2013 #5 Share Posted May 4, 2013 No, you can't use your pass for gambling, but you can get an advance charged to your sea pass account. They charge fees for those advances. The ATM machines can be a source for money, as well. We were on one ship where the machine would not work most of the cruise. I would bring some cash to get started. Is it only the casino you can draw cash at, I think I remember drawing cash from the exchange/purser's desk on a different cruise line? If there is a charge to transfer $ from ship account to casino I will have DH plan for his casino $ separately. Even easier to make sure he sticks to a limit that way. kitty9 Posted May 4, 2013 #9 Share Posted May 4, 2013 We re going in the Caribbean I was thinking about bringing American money for the casino. Should I just bring canadian $$$ thanks The casino is run totally on US dollars. You can bring Canadian money, but you will have to exchange it for US dollars, at a not very good exchange rate. I think that if you pay for your Sea Pass account at the end of the cruise using a credit card, any cash you received as an advance against your Sea Pass will be treated as a cash withdrawl by your credit card company. This may mean that you may be paying a higher interest rate on that portion of your credit card bill and that the interest will start accruing either on the date of the withdrawl or the date the card is charged. As a result, you could be nailed for interest charges even though you pay off your credit card monthly. I would be inclined to suggest that you take cash if at all possible so as to avoid substantial fees and/or interest charges whether through an ATM or a cash advance. We have not sailed on Celebrity yet (will be on the Summit in June), but have sailed on many others and have never been charged for a cash withdrawal on our credit card. It has always just been a regular charge on our bill and subsequently charged regularly on our credit card.

I based my theory on some friends that say they got hammered under similar circumstances on a cruise several years ago. I can't remember the cruise line - Hmmm - maybe a mental process Error Code ID 10T on my part.

Cathy p Posted May 4, 2013 #15 Share Posted May 4, 2013 We always bring cash for the casino. We count on $50 per night for each of us. If we lose oh well and if we win that amount goes in a separate envelope marked NOT FOR USE ON THIS CRUISE.:)
