DarceyJK Posted May 4, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted May 4, 2013 Whale watching is very good out of Victoria, pretty much the whole year. Thank you!! I checked with Eagle Wing but they dont have a tour to accommodate our time there. My second choice is Prince of Whales. Hopefully something will pan out! I'm super excited to do this!!:D
Budget Queen Posted May 4, 2013 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2013 A significant problem, with most cruises is their late port arrival. This is usually after the regular tour schedules, and you would have to take a ship tour. Add to the mix, these ship tours are shorter- which is a big negative. There are 3 resident orca pods, but they have hundreds of miles of range with Victoria about a midpoint. Shorter time, means they have to be within closer range. With the ship tours, they probably have a 75/80% sightings success. In my case, I go to Victoria for a few days, and plan on going out at least 3+++ times, Even with this amount of time, I was still unsuccessful one time. LisaWV Posted May 7, 2013 #6 Share Posted May 7, 2013 Yes, definitely go whale watching in Victoria. Its amazing. Book through the cruise line and you won't have to worry about the timing. We booked with Carnival and went late afternoon into sunset. We saw about 20 whales, both resident and transient. You won't be sorry you went on this excursion. We went on mid August so late July should be a great time to go. It was really spectacular to see the whales so close.
Putterdude Posted May 8, 2013 #7 Share Posted May 8, 2013 Are you saying I shouldnt do a whale watching tour in Victoria? If you are arriving in Victoria after about 5 pm it may not be a good investment in time and money....but that is somewhat temped by date you are going to be there. People who do not see whales often comment on what lovely scenery and interesting marine life they have seen Both Eagle Wing and Orca Spirit operate out of Fishermen's Wharf which is an easy walk from the cruise terminal but check their skeds. DarceyJK Posted May 8, 2013 Author #8 Share Posted May 8, 2013 Thank you everyone. We will be there early July and we dock at either 2 or 2:30. I have 2 conflicting itineraries  Anyway, I think we are going to book it thru our cruise line and be on the safe side. Thanks agian for all of your input!! Much appreciated!! operabob1 Posted May 9, 2013 #9 Share Posted May 9, 2013 If you do book independently ask first if the killer whales are about. If they aren't you can negotiate a lower price with some. Just sayin'!
