Can Quantum Compete with Breakaway?

Recommended Posts

I really think the small balconies will be a deal breaker for a lot of cruisers if they have the choice between Breakaway and another cruise ship

The only problem is that 99% of cruisers can barely name what ship they are going on, let alone know how big it's balconies really are.

I happened to be standing by my kitchen window this morning at 5:50 AM and saw Breakaway returning from her 2-day "inaugural" (the one they chose to supply the bells and whistles for)... we should get a healthy influx of reveiws on CC in the next day or so. Curious to hear more comments and see more pictures of the various balconies.

The epic was a disaster from the word go !! If I remember correctly it went through some change orders, the numerous fires on board while they were building it, then ncl took that hit by canceling the second one.

New management of the company, more or less, disowned the EPIC and is claiming that the Breakaway is their first ship and where NCL is headed. New management did put in change orders on the Epic and made chicken salad out of chicken crap. That's what they are saying. Their track record begins with this ship. Time will tell and reviews will be telling.

I'm not too sure about that. Just like any other cruise ship, some balcony categories have larger balconies. On the Breakaway, there are approximately 80 standard balcony and mini-suite categories that have much larger balconies. Then there are those on every deck near the hump that are on an angle that gives you some extra space also. Grant it while most are very tiny, at least if one does their research you do have a shot at grabbing a better size balcony.

Can Quantum Compete with Breakaway?

Yes she can and she will.

Same home port, similar size, similar tendency to reduce open space and pack more pax in enclosed space.

However, QOS did not go that far.

QOS design is more creative overall and won't feature pay-per-bite concept.

I've taken a closer look at the Breakaway recently.

In many areas (not all) it represents an obvious improvement over the previous design.

The most visible is the "Waterfront".

General impression - bland, boring, overcrowded floating hotel&casino with minimal open space (kudos for the Waterfront - the only reminder of a cruise ship - but that's not enough).

Despite her gaping wounds the QOS is still a higher class ship.

But there also will be a great deal of the clientele overlap - the casino/bars/party crowd.

do you know the total number of outside balcony cabins? :) 80 seems to be a very small percentage:( my concern is how will the breakaway handle crowds during the winter months when the outside spaces aren't usable.

I don't know the total number....my guess is "a lot?;) I agree that compare to many ships, the Breakaway does have a smaller percentage of cabins that offer larger balconies.

There are others that have the same concerns like you. FWIW, from what I read, the Transatlantic cruise had approximately 3,000 pax on board and most outdoor spaces were not being used as it was too cool. The few that were on that cruise seem to think that if it was at full capacity, some areas may have been a bit too cramped. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'll look for your review after your cruise. :)

Everything indicates Quantum will be much better. Only thing I see that I would want to go on Breakaway for is the awesome waterslides/rope course... Wish Royal would do that: it looks amazing.

I just had another good look at both of the ships as an future up market user , I am sure that the Quantum Class

will be a great success.

The weather is getting crappier and the Quantum Class are better suited for this and around the

Arctic

Antarctic , South America

NY ,Greenland , Iceland , UK

The Baltic, Norway, Northern Russia

Northwest Passage

Vancouver , Alaska , Eastern Russia , Japan , Asia.

and it has zip lines and a viewing area into the pool ( I think)

I am old but who wants to play trivial pursuit, bingo and just eat all of the time. :(

Flow riders

Rock Walls

Comedy Clubs

Disco's

Bars

Beautiful Women

etc are the go for me :p

Terrible picture.

Crammed open pool area with no space for an apple to drop.

"Jogging (joking) track" at its worst.

Yes, cold seas is a better use for this ship but AFAIK it's going to sail in the Caribbean:eek:.

Funny, I had the complete opposite thought. I think from that picture it looks very spacious....way more space, much wider than the pool decks on Breakaway.

I agree. I'm looking forward to experiencing this ship when she finally comes out. The smearing and condemnation of this ship, which all of it hasn't been revealed yet, by some people is bordering on absurd.

I agree. The pool deck looks nice and spacious from that artist rendering. :D I noticed the tiered seating around the pool.

And add to that the Solarium and the other covered pool and there will be plenty of space. I ignore the nay sayers. I heard the same thing OVER AND OVER about the Reflection on the X board by one poster. Guess what? They were wrong. Nothing wrong with the Reflection at all but then again I don't go through life looking for half empty glasses. ;):)

LOL!!! I am excited I'll get a chance to book a sailing or two on the Quantum. So far, I haven't seen anything that would prevent me from booking a cruise. :D

The Thread Above Was Deleted After Existing Several Days. There were a number of posts in it and when I put it up there was nothing especially disturbing or hostile in it.

IMHO: It's a nice one timer but once you stand in line with 400 kids for 1/2 hour on 5 flights of stairs you will wish you were anywhere else....it just doesn't have a repeat apeal. IMHO: Go to a nice water park for the week end for this kind of fun.

BTW, yes, we were on Breakaway and it (the whole ship) failed to impress. There were a few things that were well done but nothing like what brings us back to RCI over and over again.

When the sea is calm and there is no relative wind on the side of the ship you are trying to eat on it is really nice.......But, with the temp comming inside everytime the door is open you will freeze or bake inside and your food will be blown around outside for a majority of the time. The concept is nice BUT when you think about it the weather is a huge limit on when you will be comfortable AND add that to the distance between where the food is prepared and served makes the food arrive at the table near the temperature it should be at your last bite..... OH, and you pay for it. You also pay $10 extra for a second entre in a speciality venue. QOS has taken the "free" and the "style" out of free style.

This is true........but, you will remember sitting in a chair on the balcony and not being able to move your feet. On a deck 12 balcony we had to turn the chairs to sit facing each other. The back of the chair hits the glass and you can not stand between the chair and the rail! So, Q should be a one shot.

In my experience the trick is to enjoy it on a port day that you're not inclined to get off the ship for as an experienced cruiser (classic example being Nassau, which nobody really likes and has been to 1,000 times). Fortunately, Breakaway's itineraries are so crappy that I only see myself getting off the ship at their private island, leaving me with 2 port days (PC, Nassau) to enjoy the slides and other attractions.
