Rock of Ages, Burn the Floor and kids

We saw both shows on the maiden voyage from London to NYC.

We LOVED both. Rock of Ages has great music and a fun storyline. It's rock in the 80s....the dress is skimpy and just like the 80s, there are many sexual overtones. The show is extremely well done, but there is adult language, drugs (even the smell of marijuana is imitated and comes from the stage) and adult themes. I would have no problem bringing my older teens. The show is excellent. The cast is terrific. The music is phenomenal. Tip: be sure to bring a candle from the restaurant that night....we did and were able to hold up our "lighters" (eletric candles) during some music parts....just like the "old" days. So much fun!!!! Lots of subtle jokes that you will miss if you aren't paying attention. LOVED IT!!

Burn The Floor is great for anyone. It is a high energy dance show. No storyline, just music and dancing. The dancers are amazing. We enjoyed this as well.

We also paid to see Cirque....it was amazing!!! However, do not pay for premium seats -- they are only worth it if you are guaranteed to be on stage or in the first row. We paid for premium and were seated at a middle table with people in front of us blocking the view. Be sure to see this show though!!!

Is Burn the Floor a dinner show, or just a show? We are definitely going to do that. Also, we do plan on doing Cirque on the Breakaway for the first time. The jungle theme appeals to us more than the Epic's show. Thanks for the tip on the seating!

Primarily it's a show by itself in the main theater, but I believe I have read that there will be shortened/preview/special performances during a dinner or two in the Manhattan Room MDR. This would be similar to how they did an abbreviated "Legends" show in Manhattan Room on the Epic one or two nights.

Can someone who has seen ROA please be more specific about it being for adults only?

My mature 13yo dd loves any types of shows/musicals, so I'd like to see it with her if it's not incredibly bad. I don't care about curse words and I understand the outfits may be skimpy. The pot smell wouldn't bother me either. What else is there? Are there simulated "intimate" acts going on?

thanks for the reply. if it weren't for that, I'd be ok with it. oh well. other shows to see.

My guess is you will be ok with it. It's a silly story line told with campy covers of 80s songs. Yes, there's a couple of more risque scenes, but I fear people are giving the impression that this is like some sort of 90 minute soft porn show, which it is not. We took our 15 year old nephew to the Broadway show and it was totally fine. We all loved it.

While I don't know your family's tolerance levels, the 'intimate' acts are probably less raunchy then what you see on tv. Not having seen the Breakaway Version I don't know if this applies, but the raunchy scene is in a bathroom and all you see are legs coming up in the air. There might have been one other scene with scantily clad women around the famous rocker. It has been awhile since I saw the musical and some of the movie is blending in with my memory. If you have seen the movie, the stage version is about half as raunchy.

Just got off of Breakaway. I have one of those "mature 13 year olds" and I was so glad she wasn't with me during ROA. No way!

I started to type the specific things that made it so inappropriate then I realized that we have children that read this board.

So I deleted my reply and I am just going to say - it's not for children. You can take yours if you want. Mine won't be there. ;)

Burn the floor - yes - take them! They are amazing dancers!

I just finished reading your review. My son definitely won't be seeing the show. It's too bad because he would have enjoyed the music. I'm sure he'll be content in the arcade anyway!

By the way, you have some great pictures in your review! :)

I wonder how long it will take for someone to post how Legally Blonde is offensive to their children on Getaway. Maybe because I was a teenager in the 80's can can relate to the music that I am being overly defensive. But there are much worse things in video games and on TV. NCL would never bring an offensive stage act to one of their ships. I seriously believe that some should stick to Disney cruise lines. "It's a small world" is fun but it gets old after awhile :)

To say "my child will be in the arcade" is total irony. The arcade games have firearms where they kill people. Yes, that is so much safer and appropriate than a silly Broadway show LOL How funny and ironic :)

Norwegian is happy to bring entertainment for ADULTS onboard (Rock of Ages) and have the Splash Academy crew open early for the parents who want to see the early show.

And on the flip side - they bring all of the Nickelodeon activities for the children.

I don't know what there is to get upset about. There have been adult only comedy shows onboard ships for years. You usually don't see the parents outraged that they couldn't bring little junior to those.

"Mature Entertainment" is for just that - mature. If someone wants to bring their older teen in - I am positive they can handle it. They would probably be watching rated R movies anyway.

Younger teens and UNDER - as a parent - I prefer not to explain to a 9 year old why they are singing about "fellatio" - actual word used in ROA.

Parents asked for advice from other parents who saw the actual show onboard Breakaway - I am answering. And my kids despise Disney ;)

Quite opinionated for someone who hasn't even seen show. Yes, my child likes to play those "really offensive" racing games in the arcade. How ironic!

  • 3 weeks later...

I just returned from the May 19-26 week. Yes, there are warnings about ROA and it not being appropriate for children. It also was not appropriate or appreciated by a lot of the adults on my cruise. Many walked out all during the show. I had heard the music was good, so I hung in hoping to hear some good music. This just truly brings out the differences in all of us. Just because some people think this type of entertainment is "good", doesn't mean the rest of us should have to forego a nightly show. This show should be late night entertainment, and all 7pm shows should be family friendly. There are a lot of adults who do not find vulgar acts and cussing entertainment. I'm sorry NCL thinks we do.

ROA was an exceptional show once we were able to get in to see it. We had reservations for the late show on first night and after spending about 30 terrifying minutes outside the theatre with the corridors, stairs, and elevator lobbies completely blocked with people, we were told the show was cancelled. NCL employees were actually standing around letting more and more people pour into these areas creating a disaster in the making. Had an emergency broken out, there would have been people trampled and killed. This also happened on fire works night in the Fire Island area. We couldn't get out of the room because NCL employees were directing hundreds of people into the room that was so small I'm surprised nobody was hurt.

Anyway, why is it impossible to find our who is in the case of ROA on the Breakaway? It would have been nice if NCL had some kind of program like you get on Broadway which at least gave the names and backgrounds of the actors. They were marvelous and the show was wonderful! I would have gone back to see it again had there been time. I have searched the internet and can't find any information on the actors. Such a shame, they were great.
