Gem Aft-facing minisuite questions

Recommended Posts

We were in 11156 on the Jade in 2008 when we criused to the North Cape in Norway.

The views were spectacular and at the back you get to see both sides and it's well worth it to get the great photo ops that you get with a clear view of both sides.

When the ship is underway there is quite a lot of noise from the wash of the propellers. Unlike other ships, you really right on top of the wash. We didn't find that the noise from the Garden Cafe was a problem and apart from one coffee stirrer and the odd sugar empty packet that blew over we had no problems with litter as you are tucked right underneath. Lower decks will have more issues with that!

There are no problems with people making a noise as they pass on the corridor as the only people that pass are the few people at the aft.

In the mini you find that there is space to get out onto the balcony with the sofa bed deployed. You can't do that in a balcony so if your third person wants to lie in while you sit on the balcony enjoying the morning view, they can do so without you disturbing them.

The deck 11 balconies are no bigger than any other minis, but larger than a balcony by about half. If you look at photos, you will see that they have one and half partitions balcony depth where the standard balcony has just one.

The balcony is a real suntrap and you will fry if the sun is at the back with very little wind.

If you look at the pics in my signature of the Norway trip in 2008 there are pictures, including some of the aft in Gerainger fjord which show the aft very effectively.

Sorry,

I have just tried the link and all my Webshots pictures have gone.

I will repost them on another site so that you can see them but it will take some time.

Tony

Thank you so much for all your helpful information!

I , too, lost all my webshots photos, and I'm just sick over it. Please don't worry about uploading shots again, as I have definitely found numerous photos that show the aft of the ship well. I think I'm just about convinced that the aft is where we need to be this time around. :D

I just wanted to extend my thanks to everyone who contributed their thoughts and experiences in this thread, and let you all know that I made the jump yesterday. VERY much looking forward to experiencing that fabulous aft-view! :D

Great decision! I will be looking for your comments and/or review. We will be in an Aft Mini Suite 11150 October 2014, so your insight will be beneficial. Our first aft facing balcony was on the Gem and now we always book this area. The views amazing..............:D

Reloaded the pics onto Google now.

Fixed, the link should work now

Hi, Sorry for butting in, but I'm researching rooms for next year and I spotted this.

We want to try an aft cabin next year and I was tending towards a deck 10 Balcony on the Jade due to having the larger balcony but perhaps more so because of it would be an extra deck below the Great Outdoors.

Anyway, we travel with our son, and I like to sit on the balcony and read at night when he is in bed. Can you confirm that I wouldn't be able to do this in an aft balcony, or is it just a bit tricky?

If the balcony isn't accessible then it will be the Mini Suite for us.

Thanks.

We had a balcony on the Dawn. The sofa bed's foot section was a metal section which pulled out and filled the walk space out to the balcony so that you couldn't access the balcony without stepping onto the bed. You could push it in a little and squeeze through if your son is short. Since then we have gone for the mini to avoid disturbing our daughter when we sit on the balcony in the morning.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realise that you hadn't done the balcony on the Jewel class ships, but I'm going to assume that access to the balcony is as issue on those ships as well.

The balcony itself looks a decent size in the minis on deck 11, even if it isn't quite as big as deck 10, so I think that we will probably go there if we decide to book the cruise.
