For the ones wanting a smaller ship experience

Hmmm Offering an introductory two-for-one rate of $4,999 for a 14 nighter which includes drinks and excursions ?

Add to that the loss of revenue of not having a casino or additional fee restaurants and I am not sure how this works $ wise.

It's not two for $4,999 - that's the per person price! I downloaded the brochure from the Viking website. The "list" price is twice that high, so that's why they are claiming it is two-for-one. :(

...

This article mentions a 9-night at $3000 for two for a Med trip, that is half the cost of Azamara.

...

The news releases are confusing/misleading. They say "Introductory 2-for-1 pricing" but then they say "starts at $2,999 per person". What they mean is that the 2-for-1 price is $5,998, which comes out to $2,999 per person.

I was very excited when I first saw this, thinking it was a fantastic introductory deal, but it's basically similar pricing to the other luxury lines such as Azamara & Oceania.

We just booked the 5/02/15 Barcelona to Bergen itinerary. 15 day cruise with overnights in Barcelona, Paris, London and Bergen. Viking does have an unusual policy on final payment date. They require a $500.00 deposit per person and the final payment is 12/31 of this year.

There are different prices for the same type cabin depending on the deck booked. The higher the deck, the higher the price. Cabin size is the same. Example: Deluxe Veranda on deck three was $1100.00 cheaper per person than the same type cabin on deck eight. The agent told me bookings were very strong.

I really like the concept and the all-nclusive price - not much more than X when you add on all the extras we pay for on X - drinks, Internet, shore ex, grats, etc. Don't like the idea of paying now for a 2015 cruise though.

Looks like Viking will be going after Celebrity's customers who are tired of the big ship experience. I actually think that this sounds very nice with the exception of no casino.

Why?

It sounds perfect for us and I phoned Viking today, but they are only marketing in the US at the moment and will not be able to take bookings from UK residents until September. I hope there are still some good cabins left by then!

I was suspicious of the pricing, because I have seen Viking River Cruises quote two for one, then give the reduced cost per person. If the quoted price had really been for two people we would have jumped at it, but at double that it is outside our price range. We prefer to travel more often than blow our budget on one cruise. So many places to visit, so little time!

They don't include the shore excursions, though - that was another thing that was misleading. They include a specific shore excursion each day, and for the cruise I looked at, it was a walking tour at each port. So not a big $ excursion! And if you want to do something else, you pay the full price.

Hi Everyone,

While I'm excited to see a new venture with new ships... I do not see Viking as huge competition to Celebrity. I see this more as competition to Oceania & Azamara.

We'll see how it all plays out. One thing's for sure - it will definitely be interesting !

I am on Vikings mailing list (and man do they send A LOT of mail  ) and their pricing is not even in the same stratosphere as Celebrity's. I'd love to try a Viking cruise, but for a one week river cruise I can spend a month on Celebrity... :p

I know. That's the reason my replies on this thread have been a little testy, sorry! :o I read the initial information and thought what some others have thought...that this new ship was launching with rates comparable to Celebrity. But it was not to be.

BTW - I am a fellow Cavalier owner. Love my pup. :D
