bighairtexan Posted May 25, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 25, 2013 I'm so easy to please. I'm just glad anything is there year round and as mentioned for now that's the Navigator.
Driftwoodgal Posted May 25, 2013 #4 Share Posted May 25, 2013 Years ago Galveston had two ships the Rhapsody and Splendour. We took our first Panama Canal cruise out of Galveston. I would love to see them do longer cruises. Staying docked over night in Key West, New Orleans. etc. Give you time to explore the town instead of just having a tour. Just glad there is a ship year round.
Back2reality Posted May 25, 2013 #5 Share Posted May 25, 2013 They need more out of the port of Houston, besides NCL. The Freedom class would be nice!
Camlott Posted May 25, 2013 #6 Share Posted May 25, 2013 I think once all three new builds are in service, it's a good possibility that Galveston gets a freedom class ship. By that point I could possibly see them moving Navigator to west coast or giving some some other seasonal home port a permanent ship.
OKC Cruisers Posted May 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted May 25, 2013 I don't know. With Navigator coming next fall and then staying year-round, I can't see it. The differences between a Freedom class and Navigator (especially after it's revitalization) are not that great. But, ya never know. Of course, once the European market picks up again, Galveston will probably lose its year-round status...again. Pete

OKC Cruisers Posted May 25, 2013 #9 Share Posted May 25, 2013 They need more out of the port of Houston, besides NCL. The Freedom class would be nice! Isn't Princess also going to start sailing from the Houston Cruise Port? I would love to see some more options out of the Houston/Galveston area. I, too, would love to do a full transit of the Panama Canal out of Galveston Bay area. Also, would really like Royal to add a third itinerary on Navigator, like Carnival does with Magic, and do the Key West/Coco Cay/Nassau cruise. OKC Cruisers Posted May 25, 2013 #10 Share Posted May 25, 2013 HiI am sailing into Galveston in November We are picking our hire car up at Sears at Texas City How far away is thar from the port and how much will a cab cost, Thanks Steve If I remember correctly, the Sears is located at the mall at exit 15 (so make it between 15 - 20 miles from the cruise port). We always stay at the Hampton Hotel at the same exit, but I'm not sure of what the taxi cost would be. Pete

ssb Posted May 25, 2013 #14 Share Posted May 25, 2013 Nothing is permanent in time. Galveston will only get better for cruising. Time is on their side. There will be better and bigger ships in Galveston 1. because of its geographic location and proximity to the Midwestern US 2. Proximity to 5 of the larger cities and faster growing cities in the Us Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and Ft. Worth 3. Southern migration to Texas from the western and northern US 4. and because of port being right on the the Gulf of Mexico with immediate access to deep water 5. current and long range improvements planning to the port channel and infrastructure and downtown Galveston 6. 32 miles of beach in city 7. Galveston's many available tourist attractions right at terminal doorstep 8. Galveston is a top tourist destination in Texas and for midwest 9. Hobby Airport becoming an international airport 10. better direct Freeway access to Galveston with planned highways projects for the present and continued growth in the area 11. And any betterments in Galveston and Bayport Cruising situation will only help for a bigger and better situation for greater southeast Texas that both Galveston and Houston will participate in! If you will be staying at a hotel in Texas City, they may offer a shuttle service from the port. There are 3 hotels that practically share the same parking-lot as Sears (and the Budget Car Rental). I grew up in this area and am actually between Galveston and Texas City right now. Sears is about 5 miles North of me and Galveston is 10 miles South of me. We booked Hertz, also Texas City but in fact enough people did the same they sent the cars and a couple of people to the dock so we picked it up right there ! Of course this year Navigator arrives on a Sunday so it's not so easy for rentals.
