On Grandeur now..

Recommended Posts

CNN just reported on the incident. Of course they dramatize...passengers "terrified," "chaos," passengers fainting, etc. Then they show amateur video and everyone looks calm.

Sadly journalism is dead in this country replaced by sensationalism.

Grandeur was in Port Canaveral yesterday arriving about 11 am and departed about 9 pm. She was seen on the portcanaveral webcam

I was watching the webcam yesterday. I thought I saw that ship go out. At least the Spendor was close if they had needed that ship. This is so scary, at least everyone is safe. I have a horror of fire on a ship. Sometimes ships do go out close together that is a good thing if anything should happen. I have been so lucky to have been on very safe cruises. But accidents can happen anywhere or anytime. I know if I go on another cruise, I will pay more attention at the drill, it is for my own safety.

Thanks again for the info !!

And another CNN report. There was panic onboard! CNN spoke with a passenger by phone that also took some video. Although the passenger stated she was scared and probably ran as fast as she ever had to her muster station her video shows people acting calmly, wearing their life vests as ordered, and awaiting other instructions.

Captain Espen is the best, in my opinion. Glad to hear everyone is OK.

Agreed! I hope he gets some recognition for RCI for how he handled this incident. From every account I've heard so far, the crew handled this beautifully. This could have been catastrophic.

Good to know, I never really thought about a middle of the night emergency. Since I'm leaving in a few days this has me a little concerned. Its reassuring that everyone is safe and sounds like the crew performed awesome

RC can do dry docks of entire ships in 7-10 days, so they should have Grandeur up and running in great condition asap. The important thing is that all crew and passengers are safe.

If the Drydock is planned, and all materials present.

I'm glad that no one was injured. I'm very impressed with reports of how the crew responded to the fire and their care for the passengers.

True -- but in those cases the dry dock is planned for months if not years beforehand with all vendors, parts, supplies, craftspeople, plans, etc.. all worked out before the ship even docks.

No doubt RCCL is scrambling but this would not be a typical dry dock-type exercise.

No need for a dry docking since all the damage is well above the waterline.

Man loses money in the casino, goes back to cabin to have a smoke. Still upset, launches butt over aft side of ship. Fire starts, and accelerates after catching passengers stored/confiscated liquor cache.

If I were you I would consider writing novels for a living.

Seriously, this incident happened just a few hours ago and the experts in this thread are already blaming smokers. Considering the miles of electrical lines going through a typical cruise ship I'm surprised there aren't more fires. I'm all for throwing someone off the ship at the next port for throwing butts off a ship but I would prefer to wait for the official findings before blaming someone/something for the fire.

At last week's muster drill on the Grandeur, they were scanning Seapass cards when you checked in at your muster station, so they are able to get a complete and accurate accounting of all passengers. The muster signal is quite loud and will be piped into each stateroom so one would have to be extremely hard of hearing to miss it. I also believe that they would have a list of any deaf passengers so that they could go to the cabin to alert them. Since the ship sailed on Friday, the muster drill instructions should have been fresh in the minds of most passengers.

Thank you for posting this information. DH and I were talking about this very issue. DH said this is how muster drills should be ran. On Disney in 2008 they took a physical head count and you had to answer when your name was called.

Our concern on Carnival is they hoard people into a muster station and never take a roll call. Thank goodness we have never had a need to go to muster station except for drill.

The swiping of your sign and sail card or sea pass as called on RCL is awesome. It lets them know in a short amount of time who is present and who is not. Great safety feature.

No one is hardly blaming smokers. I've been saying in many posts it is a long shot that a passenger can throw a butt from balcony and land it on deck three aft- even with wind. Even if they did a fire would be unlikely. Someone from the crew likely knows how/where it started.

They still have not given the cause of the fire and I'm sure it will be a while until they know. I can't say it was caused by a cigarette or someone smoking. What I WILL say is that on a recent cruise I was amazed, shocked and angered at how many people threw their hot ashes and cigarette butts overboard!!

Hopefully seeing something like this will make them realize the potential danger and have them seeking out proper ashtrays to dispose of ash and butts!!!

Not all people who smoke are "in their right minds"...

Found this little souvenir on our (mid-ship) balcony one morning on the Oasis a couple of weeks ago. We have encountered that more when sailing in aft corner cabins... and yes, the same type of smoking material (more traditional types as well).

Nobody thinks that their one item tossed overboard could cause any harm.

No telling what caused this (near) disaster, hopefully they'll find the cause and help to see that similar occurrences are less likely in the future.

DH and I were just having a discussion with his parents a couple of days ago how a cruise would be a perfect vacation for them. They went on a cruise once many, many years ago. They said given all the recent news reports of issues on ships they would never consider it. I tried for quite a while to argue my case...having been on 12 cruises (I think!) myself, and never having had any issues. Honestly, given the sensationalism the media gives to these situations, I can understand how non-cruisers could be scared. It's beginning to get a bit frightening....not that it would ever stop my cruising, but they really should put a lot more importance on those muster drills, as much as we all hate them. They seem to be getting easier as people complain about the "time wasted." Good job by the crew, evidentially, on this one, thank goodness no one hurt, and I look forward to my next cruise, which is unplanned as of now. I must go off now to the news stations to see how they are hyping this up.

I haven't heard anything. The usual facilities like the fitness center are not open because crew is busy cleaning up. Not sure what will happen. There is a new FB post from RCL regarding this cruise but I can't call it. Can someone please and see what it says?

"Grandeur of the Seas experienced a fire on the aft mooring deck this morning which was quickly extinguished. All guests and crew are fully accounted for. The ship is in calm seas, has full power and is making it's way to Freeport, Bahamas for evaluation. We will post more information as it is available."

That is the only FB posting from RCI that I can see. It was posted 8 hours ago.

first to all of you aboard for trusting your lives with a great Captain and his outstanding staff...and for honestly posting how well they all responded rather than reporting something untrue. Secondly, major praise and kudos to how RCCL has always done their best to prepare us for such a horrific circumstance. I'm guilty of sometimes complaining that the drill took too long, especially if you're standing in blazing sun light or in the bitter cold. I will no longer complain but listen more intently and pay attention. I will also reconsider how I will be prepared for such an event...pack a 'go kit' with meds and such, flashlights, snacks/water, whatever so I can grab it and go.

I am so very happy that everyone involved is safe, shaken I'm sure, but safe. Hopefully the rest of your trip will be of good memories outweighing the bad ones. We are all here for you...however we can help.

We are supposed to sail on the 21st...I feel optimistic.
