Senegal - Yellow Fever

Hi All

As an over 60 with an allergy to eggs, I have been advised that Yellow Fever immunization may not be appropriate.

I appreciate that I will not be allowed to disembark at Senegal but will I be allowed to board the Sinfonia in Cape Town?

Thanks

Annie

I am 99% sure you must have immunization prove before boarding.

According to MSC website immunization is compulsory only on South Bound cruises to Cape Town unless you are in possession of a Certificate of Exemption for which I qualify.

I will investigate more and report back.

I'd definitely look in to the exemption certificate.

On our Southbound trip, people were allowed to board without it but there was a mass immunisation thing onboard before we reached South Africa. If you could not show a Yellow Fever Certificate or had proof of an exemption, they made you get the vaccination. It was that or leave the cruise before South Africa. I did encounter a 90 something year old British passenger who could not been immunised. I overhead him speaking to Guest Services about it and was told that as long as he had evidence why he could not be immunised, it would not be an issue.

As a frequent visitor To S A , I don't think that you need a yellow fever certificate to enter, if you are flying out from the UK and not setting foot in Africa on the way.

You don't need one to leave S A. I wouldn't bother getting off in Dakar !!!

However, I would recommend calling the S A High Commission to verify this.

Hi All

I have flown before to SA - and I have not required the Yellow Fever certificate.

I know I am eligible for an exemption and I will ensure I receive that. MSC website only speaks of SB journeys.

However I am sailing Northbound and I was trying to verify what certification is required prior to joining the vessel in Cape Town. As I am leaving SA, I am unsure if SA regulations are relevant.

It's more the countries after Senegal you need to take into account. You need to know their policy on travellers that have passed through a country with yellow fever. We were told for the Southbound trip that just staying onboard at Senegal (not Inwanted to ho ashore there anyway) would not be sufficient.

Thanks AmoMondo

I am checking this out with MSC and the health authorities.

I'll come back and let everyone know what I ascertain.

AmoMondo,

Have you been to Senegal before? I was there in 2008. Went to the Pink Lake, a Fulani village (meeting w its chieftain), and taking a 4x4 on a beach/high dunes' leg of the Paris-Dakar rally...that was one if the best shore excursions I've taken! Even stopped for an "Avenue of the Baobabs"-type tour. Hope you reconsider Senegal; regardless, have a great trip!

No hadn't been before to Senegal. Some of the passengers at my table did the Pink Lake excursion, which they enjoyed. They were a bit put off by the necessity for the armed escort and when they did stop anywhere, found the local hawkers very aggressive.

I don't like organised trips and almost never do them these days. Hate travelling by coach for any length of time and dont like the whole feeling of being jerded around. If there are very small groups and it something impossible to do on my own, And I really, really want go do it, then I may do a tour.

So for me Dakar was a no no. It was not the kind of port that I could safely explore on my own.

In March 2014 I'll be northbound on the Sinfonia also and believe it or not am looking forward to seeing Dakar (with an organized ship's excursion though). I don't particularly enjoy the thought of getting a yellow fever shot - have had them before and they hurt for days afterward. Hope the requirement is only for the southbound repositioning cruises.

YF certificate is a requirement for Senegal.

Have you joined the Roll Call?? If not, please do.

Once MSC and health authorities come back to me, I'll let everyone know what I have uncovered.

MSC advise with the YF exemption certificate, I can board Sinfonia at Cape Town and disembark at Senegal. I must send them a copy of the certificate.

I am surprised I would be allowed to disembark at Senegal.

I still await the result of my enquiries from the health authorities.

I have checked with one of the travel health clinics and their advice was as my husband and I are both over 70 was to get an exemption certificate for Yellow Fever vaccination unless we intended staying in Senegal but to have a talk with our own doctor! They seemed to think that there was a possibility you could be refused onboard a cruise liner at port of embarkation if the liner berths in a country where a Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory if you do not either have a certificate or exemption certificate! Gets more complicated!!!
