Cunard Formal Nights

I wonder what the reaction would be to a passenger thinking of booking a Cunard cruise or voyage after reading the comments about Cunard Fashion Police.

Who exactly are these fashionista fasciste?

My assessment is that they are varied. Some are "would be's if they could be's". Some are those who actually did have it all -- "once upon a time" . And others are just simply "drama Queens". Drama Queens are amusing though :) They can be males or females -- or something in-between!

What was even funnier is that my next post, commenting on posts going missing, also disappeared. I wonder how long this one will last.

The rules forbid any comment about deleted posts.

Hi Whitemarsh,

From your profile picture, I am sure you are a beautiful young lady. I enjoy the pictures you have posted with lovely dresses. Now a favour, could you post something in which women over 50 are modelling?

I have found an article in the guardian about fashion for women over 50.

Firstly, you are wrong on all counts. I am neither beautiful, young or a lady.

But I do know how to enjoy myself on a Cunard cruise, something that drives certain people to distraction. Well someone had to say it.

Secondly, thanks for posting that link to that article. I enjoyed it and it certainly goes a long way to prove that you don't have to be young to make an effort and dress for the occasion.

Thirdly, as per your request, here are some gowns and dresses all modelled by women over sixty.

Lovely pics, as always, Whitemarsh.

Now, did you find any fashion advice for the plump, short woman over 60? Good style that disguises the bulges please.

Thanks fantasy51,

It's never been about body size or looks, it's always been about style and dressing for the occasion. What's the point of having marvellous interiors on Cunard ships if we're all going to sit around in our sweatpants, ugg boots and t-shirts.

Jacquie Weaver always looks good, seen below with Celia Imrei and Felicity Kendall.

It is isn't it. So have you got your next Cunard cruise booked?

Unfortunately my next cruise is with MSC in about 3 weeks. I have 2 sets of friends over from Australia, people with whom I went on my first cruise. Their times only overlap by a couple of weeks and this was the only cruise they could find that fit in that timescale. It will be a change from Cunard!!!!!

The size of my retirement pot dictates that I can manage more cruises if I'm a last-minute merchant. I watch the UK Getaway fares very closely. I booked the Dubai-Southampton leg in April with 11 days notice, having watched it for about 2 months. I enjoy the challenge. It has been so frustrating over the Summer, though, to see some wonderful deals and know that singles were excluded from these.

I am hoping for another cruise in October or early November, before my next trip to Australia.

Are you counting the days until the World Cruise starts?

Yes I am, very much so. There is a wonderful roll call for it as well, I think sometimes the success of a roll call depends quite a bit on who's on there.

I hope you have a great cruise with MSC. It's great fun cruising with friends.

You may be seeking to amuse us, but there is a grain of truth in what you say. This did happen in QG on QE2. There were self-appointed Fashion Police who would position themselves so as to scan the passengers entering the QG restaurant and they would then make a fuss if they felt the person (usually a man) was underdressed according to the dress code of the evening.

Someone once posted how Andrew Nelder was so adept at dealing with dress code infractions on QE2. Well, he had to become so because the QG dress code ****s would have been after him if he allowed standards to drop.

I did not like the QE2 version of the Fashion Police because they were humourless and argumentative. The current Cunard Fashion Police are kindliness personified compared to them.

I only complained about that one individual in 2008. We had a guy in 2010 who wore a cowboy outfit on board. It was unusual, but still dressy in a strange way. Salacia/JimsGirl were on that voyage as well. It was quite a topic of discussion. Admittedly, it fit quite well in the casino, where he was seen nightly.

Last year on a TA to New York I had the pleasure of being seated at a table with a fine and charming young gentleman. He had been travelling all over the world for a few years and was on his way back home. He had booked the voyage last minute and wanted to treat himself to something nicer than a flight. When he arrived at the table on formal night he wasn't wearing a suit or tuxedo, it was not something he had had along on his travels. He was wearing a white shirt and black tie with black fitted jumper over it. Before he sat down he apologised for his attire and asked if he was still welcome at the table. All the other guests were happy to have him, although one of the elderly ladies did complain that back on the QE2 he wouldn't even have been allowed in. The rest of us were just glad to have an interesting and very polite young man at our table. He did try to get a tuxedo for the other formal nights, but didn't manage to get hold of one in his size.

On the same voyage, we also came across 2 women on a few occassions, who were about as gracefull as an elephant and to say that they were rather rude would be an understatement. They arrived in the MDR on formal night in what could be described as evening gowns, but they completely lacked any style or grace.

I'd personally prefer to spend the evening with someone who doesn't adhere to the dress code, but is polite, friendly and interesting than with someone who does adhere to it but is rude.

I actually find it a bit sad that some people get offended by people underdressing and that they let it destroy their cruise experience. I can't think of anything anyone could wear that would lessen the enjoyment of my cruise.

Thanks a lot for the pics Whitemarsh! Now I think those are more appropriate for me as than the ones displaying young anorexic women. I will get some idea from the last pictures you have posted.

Yes the article in the guardian was good specially because it says that when beauty and youth have faded , women can still be beatiful if they develop an own style. Interesting! In this way fashion and fashion police is not the same for everyone.....

You sound like my favourite type of table companion. :)
