Cunard Formal Nights

Thanks fantasy51,

It's never been about body size or looks, it's always been about style and dressing for the occasion. What's the point of having marvellous interiors on Cunard ships if we're all going to sit around in our sweatpants, ugg boots and t-shirts.

Jacquie Weaver always looks good, seen below with Celia Imrei and Felicity Kendall.

really sorry - but I think that's Celia Imrie with Zoe Wanamaker. I'm such a pedant (is that a word??)

fab gowns though. And I love the lady in the other post, whose name absolutely escapes me, who is in Mamma Mia and The Good Wife.

Cheers

Alison

I only complained about that one individual in 2008. We had a guy in 2010 who wore a cowboy outfit on board. It was unusual, but still dressy in a strange way. Salacia/JimsGirl were on that voyage as well. It was quite a topic of discussion. Admittedly, it fit quite well in the casino, where he was seen nightly.

I recall you got a fair bit of flack on this Board when you reported what you had done. There is a fine line between acting from time to time to maintain standards, and just being continually boorish and overbearing about dress code issues.

I had no problems with what you did in 2008, but I did have issues with the way that some on board the QE2 used to carry on about the dress code in a way that made me and others most uncomfortable.

The worst of this was that I suspected that the dress code enforcers were just putting on an act in order to appear important and thus impress other QG passengers.

My assessment is that they are varied. Some are "would be's if they could be's". Some are those who actually did have it all -- "once upon a time" . And others are just simply "drama Queens". Drama Queens are amusing though :) They can be males or females -- or something in-between!

Barry, I think you have sufficient wisdom and years to know by now that you can't judge anyone's character or motivations based purely upon their writings in cyberspace.

I would suggest it is far better to hold your fire with regard to these kind of comments unless you know the person or persons concerned in real life.

Firstly -- that (coming to know most people we encounter in cyberspace) is not very likely to happen, for various reasons.

However, I have met some people from these forums in real life - and their behaviours have been much like how I have encountered them in cyberspace. Perhaps that has been because I would only arrange to meet in real life those whose cyberspace behaviour was attractive/suitable to me.:)

I believe that the persona that people portray in these forums here can be adequately assessed. I don't only need to meet a snob in real life to realise that they are one -- their writings in places like this are reasonably self evident. This also applies to other aspects of their personalities.

As for the "anonymity" of online forums, and the way in which that does allow some to disguise themselves, you will note that I do not contribute under a pseudonym here. I do not use anonymous avatars that disguise just who I am. What you see of me here is what you get in real life. That is more than I can say of some/many here.

Barry, I have no doubt that you are upfront about your opinions on all kinds of subjects and you believe you are not in disguise when you post here and elsewhere.

However, the truth is that the anonymity afforded by the internet intrudes and influences to a greater or lesser degree every communication that you or I or anyone makes on this Board.

I understand why you say that you would "only arrange to meet in real life those whose cyberspace behaviour was attractive/suitable to me". But I have found such approach to be inadvisable since:-

(1) People posting in cyberspace can readily create a persona that appears attractive/suitable, but it is a false persona;

(2) Sticking with people that appear "attractive/suitable" (and presumably therefore similar to you) based on their cyberspace persona, means that you risk not knowing a whole range of other people out there who may enrich your life but who don't squarely fit your desired prerequisites.

Nevertheless, good luck to you and others of similar opinion. I am sure it is perfectly possible to go through life as you do with your entrenched position and remain happily content.

Speaking of entrenched positions and remaining happily content...... Pot calling the kettle black ?

I am not sure that I have any more "entrenched positions" than any other person. I am merely saying that I believe it is possible to make an assessment of a person's real life persona from what they write here -- and having made an assessment, there are some that I would not care to meet in real life and some that I would and do.

What's worse is that Whitemarsh's posts just inspired me to purchase another gown.

Of course I will have to have it taken up, like all the others I have purchased recently. This trend for dragging hemlines is ridiculous.

Same here Louise D, all my long gowns had to be taken up.

Reading all these posts has just caused confusion for me! I am about to go on my first Cunard cruise (having been used to Princess) and am now thinking that my smart black 3 piece trouser suit may not be suitable for the black & white formal night (my ball gown is blue, so thought I would wear that on another formal night, my other cocktail dresses are knee length). I do not intend to actually go to the balls, just to the evening meal.

Sit back, relax, have a coffee, think pleasant thoughts, don't be a silly sausage, and (most important of all) erase from your mind every last little thing that you have read on this thread. What you are seeing is a tightly nit little group of dress code enthusiasts indulging in their favourite hobby of arguing over and forensically dissecting the minutiae of Cunard's stated dress code requirements (real or, in some cases, imagined).

The first thing you will discover when you get on board is that the dress code really isn't the be all and end all of a Cunard cruise. Indeed, it isn't a problem at all in any real sense. And the second thing you will find is that these much hyped "balls" might as well not exist unless you happen to go to the Queen's Room where you may find a few people who have dressed according to the theme.

Go and enjoy yourself, have a wonderful time and please do come back here to tell us all about it.

I agree with every word that Cruachan has written above.

Silly sausage, have the most wonderful and amazing time,

Me too. When you get aboard you will see that much of what you read here on the seemingly endless " dress code" theads is totally unrelated to what you see on the ship.

I too find I can tell much about some people by the way they write and present themselves here. However you wont need me to tell you that works for almost everyone here Barry. It is not a one way street. Some people are considered snobs by others. Some people are considered slobs by others. That is all part of life and thank goodness we are not all the same.
What you see of me here is what you get in real life. Barry
I am sure many will benefit from your thought provoking candour. I know I will and will take your advice and do as you do. I shall be very careful about who I meet in future in case I do not like them at all.

Cheers.

Hey that's my word!!

There's two camps in this dress code thread.

  1. The people who (having correctly answered the OP's question) are simply enjoying the photos and talking about clothes.
  2. The ones who profess to hate dress code threads but never fail to post repeatedly on them to remind us so - as well as throwing around the usual insults (calling people snobs etc).

If I didn't like a topic, or the people that frequently post on threads concerning that topic, I wouldn't repeatedly keep posting on those threads, calling them names and telling everyone how much I don't like them - what would be the point?

That's too bad, but you must have missed post five. The author quoted the entire dress code which specifically mentions trouser suits as acceptable for ladies on formal nights.

Enjoy your cruise. :)

You're right, it is Zoe Wanamaker. She does look somewhat like Felicity Kendall (in that picture - to me anyway :) ) - I didn't research it, I just went off face recognition.

The other lady is Christine Baranski.

Glad you enjoyed the gowns :)

So what was so confusing about this thread anyway? :)

Apart from the carping and name calling which, let's face it, would confuse anyone if they didn't know the background story.

I don't recall any post where someone said you couldn't wear a pants suit on a formal night? Did you think you read one?

Oh do keep reading them, hours and hours of harmless hilarity I do assure you.

You'll have a great time, I wish I could have my first Cunard voyage all over again.

Aw c'mon G. We all know when you took your first Cunard voyage Long John Silver still had both legs and an egg on his shoulder.
