marek165 Posted June 19, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2013 I am going on an AK cruise next year and leaving from Whittier. We are flying into Anchorage. How does one get to Whittier. Is there a bus, shuttle?
rachelfran Posted June 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2013 There are several companies that offer transfers, there's the train and your cruise line likely offers transfers ...
Saving Up To Be Eccentric Posted June 20, 2013 #3 Share Posted June 20, 2013 What Rachel said. Check the time your flight arrives against the railroad schedule here: http://www.alaskarailroad.com/Transit/Schedules/tabid/98/Default.aspx Or look up 'Whittier transfer' on Google and there are several choices for tours. Budget Queen Posted June 20, 2013 #5 Share Posted June 20, 2013 Several options, Alaska RR one train/day, independent buses listings http://www.anchorage.net cruise line bus transfers, and one way Avis car rental. A lot of people turn up their noses at the high drop fees, BUT, this can offer you a LOT of touring, that may grossly make the bes use of time. This isn't the time to rush to the ship. With the late departures, you can pack in a lot of touring opportunities. Figure out what's best for your visit.

Is there a bus, shuttle? We love that train ride! Approx. $75 per person from Anchorage to Whittier. Depart 9:45am, arrive Whittier 12:05pm. Princess has a baggage tent outside the rail station where you drop off your bags (with Princess tags) and don't touch them again till they are delivered to your stateroom. Granted, you can't stop along the Seward Highway for sightseeing, but you have great views of Turnagain Arm the first part of the trip and views of the granite hillsides where you often can see Dall's sheep. Yes - we are doing this before the 7/29 island departure. Then a PWS cruise! So excited!

If you really want to see things like this you'll need a rental car. Stop at McHugh Creek and use the free spotting scopes to get a good look at them. I was down there last week and counted 20 Dall sheep. It's amazing how they are able to survive and thrive that far up on the hillsides.
Alaska0799 Posted June 20, 2013 #9 Share Posted June 20, 2013 Yes - we are doing this before the 7/29 island departure. Then a PWS cruise! So excited! We'll be on that train, too! If you notice a man wearing a "Lake Fork, Texas" cap it will probably be my hubby. It's amazing that we still get so excited after 6 Alaska cruises! That's why we keep going back--it's the perfect vacation for us!
