AquariusOne Posted June 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2013 For those who have stayed at this hotel, how easy it is to walk and explore OSJ and walk back to this hotel. Given the choice, would stay at Sheraton OSJ or another hotel in OSJ, to explore the old city. Not considering the price but ease of exploring, dining etc. Thanks
cakerbakermom Posted June 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2013 I have not stayed at the Sheraton, but walked past it several times. Our boat spent 24 hours in OSJ in November, so we had some time to explore. It is pretty much across the street from the pier, maybe a five minute walk, counting the time it takes to cross the street. It is in the heart of OSJ. It is very do-able walking, said from a 40 something couch potato :) We actually walked this area with our young children last year, and plan on staying there for four nights in November. However, we are renting an apartment a few blocks away (Caleta64). More space and the opportunity to 'live like the locals' for a few days. We are excited about this option. If you feel it is too much walking, the open-air trolley circles the area and is easy to catch. Best part is the free ride :) OSJ really is a walkable area. I think if you chose to stay at the Sheraton, you would be pleased with the location. There are not many hotels in the the OSJ area itself, and you will find that most require a two night stay. Quickly found out that one extra day is not enough time to see everything, tho. I loved OSJ and could easily spend a week there, so much to see. Also, there is a free trolley you can catch at the many stops around town. Well worth the extra $$ IMO
cheffip Posted June 20, 2013 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2013 I've stayed at the Sheraton OSJ a couple times and you can easily walk anywhere in OSJ from there. Remember however that OSJ is hilly and the Sheraton is almost at sea level;) I found the rooms to be spacious and comfortable but nothing really luxurious about it. Nice roof-top pool though. A more upscale choice in OSJ is el Convento which is also a little more in the centre of the old city.
texancruzer Posted June 20, 2013 #5 Share Posted June 20, 2013 Have stayed at the Sheraton OSJ and also El Convento. If price is not an issue - stay at El Convento. Much cooler hotel. Also check in and out was a zoo at the Sheraton. Lots of cruisers stay here and when some are leaving others are arriving. The very small (and inadequate lobby) was crazy packed. As for walking OSJ El Convento is a bit more central. Sheraton is by the water so nice views if you are facing the right way. Also since it is by the water it is downhill from everything if that makes any difference. Saw you asked about casino in another thread- Sheratons is small and not very fancy. Did not gamble in it (altho I like to) so that might be a factor too.
jeh4554 Posted June 24, 2013 #6 Share Posted June 24, 2013 We stayed in the Sheraton pre cruise once. As others have said, it is nicely located for sightseeing but the hotel is old and the rooms are pretty average...not that nice. We thought the hotel staff was just short of being rude and customer service was minimal. I also remember a very early check-out time (maybe 10:00 a.m.) When we saw that, I asked the front desk if we could extend out checkout till 11 and they flatly refused. We had to stand around in the lobby with about 75 other cruisers with our luggage until it was time to go to the ship. I wouldn't stay there again. NCTribeFan Posted June 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted June 25, 2013 I just booked this hotel for 2 nights, pre-cruise, in November. My flight doesn't arrive until 10:40 pm so I thought about staying nearer the airport, but this way, I'll pay one taxi fare to the hotel that night and that's all I'll need. The hotel website says checkout is 11 am. If I wait and check out at the last minute, I should be able to just walk across the street to the pier. I don't need luxury. I thought at El Convento, but I got the Sheraton for a good price via Hotwire, probably two nights for less than what one night at El Convento would run me. The location is very convenient. I hope to do a lot of walking before I board the ship and start consuming all those calories!!

I'm paying $178 plus all the fees, so it's about $200 per night. Did you get a better deal on hotwire? I also had an option to come in late, but chose an earlier flight. I saw on the Sheraton website that if they are overbooked, they have the right to put you at a different property. I thought my chances of that happening would be greater the later I arrived. NCTribeFan Posted June 25, 2013 #9 Share Posted June 25, 2013 It was $116/night plus taxes and fees for a total of $269.50. It's the first time I tried Hotwire, but the info in the "sticky" thread at the top of this board was very helpful. It's pretty easy to identify that particular hotel. I never used Hotwire before. I know you get whatever they give you, but I'm going to email them and give them my Starwoods acct number and request a location that is somewhat quiet, and inform them that I'll have a late arrival.
