Smoking on the Breakaway

Shhhhhhhh! Be careful or they will gang up on you! Smokers love to find non smokers and make them miserable.

I beg to differ its usually the other way around. But as I said I am a considerate smoker - even trying the electronic ones and still I get complaints. Trying to stop but until then should I be made to feel as if I'm a criminal? :confused:

Actually it probably a little each way.

 

But it is never going to be an equal proposition. One is an action and one is a reaction.

Just got off the Breakaway on 10/20.

 

Smoking is permitted on balconies, not in staterooms.

 

Smoking is not allowed at the bars throughout the ship except for Bar 21 in the casino.

 

Maltings bar has an outdoor area that there are ashtrays at, so if you want to sit outside and have a smoke while having a drink you can.

 

The cigar lounge is decent sized, and there is also a small area directly outside the cigar lounge where you can enoy a cigar and be outdoors. Those are the only areas you can smoke a cigar aboard the Breakaway. No cigars are allowed in the casino. I enjoy a cigar and a whisky or two while in a casino, but had to adjust due to the Breakaway's rules.

 

The casino had a lot of customers during this cruise, but I did not feel that the smoke was that powerful, I guess some of the non-smoking posters on this thread have hyper-sensitive noses.

 

My wife smokes, I do not. We paid for a stateroom that had a balcony so she could have a place to smoke. She would check the balcony to our left and right and if those folks were out on their balcony, she would wait until they were gone before lighting up, or go for a walk to one of the areas on the deck that she could smoke without bothering people. In my mind, that was fair as she didn't want to infringe upon others abilities to enjoy their balconies while on their vacation.

 

I didn't think that during our cruise the smoke from the casino was overpowering other areas, but that is just my opinion.

I'm a non smoker. I even agree with a little of what you say. However, given that, why would you come to another country/cruise line that has different rules that offend you and your sensibilities when you know in advance what is going on?? In you enlightened country, there are vacation spots, cruises and other options. Why go somewhere that is going to upset you, or as you believe, endanger your life? You can't travel the world and expect each country/location to change their rules to suit you while you travel. Either go with the flow, or perhaps vacation where the rules suit you?[/quote

 

We still had a good cruise and I like to experience different cultures. We just learnt to avoid many areas on the ship and never go to the casinos in the US. We probably saved ourselves a bucket of money. This is my 14th cruise with NCL and smoke hasn't bothered us that much in the past. The positioning of the very open casino meant the atrium and surrounding areas were either smoke filled or had the stale smoke smell. This was a common complaint from many of the passengers and crew.(read the reviews and it's a common complaint). We didn't even find the smoke that bad on the Epic. We are back to the Jade on our next cruise though.

We love the cigar bars on the Gem and the Breakaway ( cigar smoking is also allowed on the Breakaway in the outside area by the cigar bar and the Whislkey Bar and by Topsiders on the Gem/Jewel). We usually meet very interesting people the in cigar bar, and cig smokers never bother us.

We were on Breakaway 6/9- 6/16.

 

The casino smoke eaters were NOT keeping up with the smoke.

 

You could smell it all the way to the elevators past O'Sheehans.

 

I believe people were told NOT to smoke on their balconies. The 3 next to us did not adhere to that. One of them smoking was fine, but three going at it was choking the two of us off our balcony (and I sprung for a mini-suite for our anniversary:eek:).

 

They need to enclose the smoking area in the casino. Gives the smokers their spot to smoke and gamble.

 

There were plenty of areas upstairs, so plenty of places for the smokers to puff.

 

When did NCL ban smoking on balconies or am I misunderstanding you? Or is it just the suite bals that are banned?

NCL HAS NOT banned smoking on any of the balconies.

NCL has now banned smoking on balconies... From their website:

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014.... The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players.

There are designated ares on the decks for smokers, but fines can be imposed:

smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account.... Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No smoking rule.[/color][/left][/color]

Hope this clears it up. I'm cruising on the Breakaway in October. If I smell cigarettes from my balcony, I plan to notify someone so that the offenders will get hit with the fee.

Yes they did....as of November 1st 2014. No smoking on any balcony except the Garden Villa balconies. Those two GV balconies are the only ones I'm aware of where you can still smoke.

As a group going on the Breakaway 9/15 with a few smokers, any info on availability of smoking areas on the ship?

 

I was on the breakaway last December. Smoking permitted on deck 8 waterfront in front of maltings with a bar and comfy chairs. Also tables and chairs in front of fat cats on waterfront. Smoking also permitted on pool deck in enclosed area and at pool bar. Vibe also has smoking at the bar. Inside its casino while playing and smoking lounge deck 8. It really was convenient. I booked on deck 8 for convenience and am doing so again next month.

As a nonsmoking gambler, I would like to point out that the casino is NOT a lounge for smokers. (and yes, I know the casino is closed in port). I am just saying, don't present the casino as a smoking lounge, because it is not. Smoking is permitted by the gamers since it is a gambling location. Those of us who like to play are most annoyed when smokers come in and sit at the machines to smoke or congregate around machines smoking so they can access ashtrays. Go ahead and throw flames at me, but I have no problem with cigar and cigarette smokers mixing together in the smoking lounge. In fact, I wish smoking rooms where the norm rather than smokers being able to pollute the air that nonsmokers must breathe. I would LOVE to have even more smoke free zones on the ships.

 

Can't wait for the cruise lines to go TOTALLY NON SMOKING, and its coming sooner rather than later.

Is your life that boring that you will report someone who is smoking on the balcony (which is against the rules ANYWAY and should NOT be done..), when the ship is underway and the smoke is wafting away from you? Do you have anything better to do on your cruise??? I hope so. Hot dayum, another half-crazed anti-smoker on the boards. Surprise!! :rolleyes:

Our last two cruises after the change..on the Gem and BA...sooo many people still smoking on balconies.... we even think Cheech and Chong were a few cabins away from us!! We didn't report anyone as we feel there should be a cabin smoking section on the ships. Not advocating breaking the rules, just stating what we encountered. Not sure if anyone was fined on the cruises....or busted.

My observations on the Getaway 3/21-28 .. Plenty of smoking .

The H2O bar seemed to be a pretty popular spot night and day.. The one pool bar also was quite crowded.. The bar outside on the water front was always full.

And , heres the part some will not be happy about , About 40% of The Stern balconies were occupied by smokers . Who made no attempt to hide the fact..

It appeared all got along alright , lasted all week..

What I did find a little strange , after boarding you get the speech over the intercom about all the do's and dont's + life boat drill... Not once did they mention not smoking on the balcony.. I found that odd . They did say "please dont throw your butts over the side as they may cause a fire" Butt that was all.

I guess my point is , NCL has the Ban in place but only enforces it if there are complaints it seems .. For what its worth I never really smelled it ..;)

Hahha .. Cheech was up on 16 at the H2O bar one evening right by the hot tub on the bar side.. fairly windy spot.. :p
