Mobile is in the unique position of not really needing the cruise line business, having recently been chosen to be the US location of Airbus' A320neo assembly facility. Mobile would LIKE a ship to call at it's terminal to justify the expense of the terminal, which is still not paid for, but, they don't really NEED the business. Mobile will just have to content itself with being an emergency port.

Perhaps, when Airbus is up and running in a couple of years, Mobile will be able to attract a discount airline that will get fares in line with other airports in the area and have connections to cities that people actually want to fly to. Jet Blue will be the launch customer for the first A320 to roll out of the plant in Mobile and the CEO, who was at the plant groundbreaking ceremony hinted at taking a closer look at some AL routes for his airline. Maybe, huh? ;)

We live in NW Florida and were frequent cruisers out of Mobile from the days of Holiday through the Elation. We would love to see another cruise ship in that port since we can make it from our driveway to check-in in just over two hours.

Talk in this area concerning the reasons for Carnival pulling out have always centered around the "management style" of the Mobile Mayor. Now that that gentleman is officially the "former mayor," there is considerable chatter on local blogs concerning the fact that "unnamed cruise lines" were in talks with the City of Mobile and showing interest in possibly putting a ship back in town.

This may be nothing more than wishful thinking on my part, but I would like to hear from anyone with a better handle on the status of the Port of Mobile as a possible cruise ship home port.
