Recommended Posts

We need to get

A. From Newark Airport to our hotel on Church Street, New York

B. From our hotel to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal

C. From Brooklyn Cruise Terminal to Newark Airport

What are our best options? We are sailing on

Caribbean Princess on 28 September 2013 New England and Canada itinerary.

Any suggestions woukd be appreciated.

Best options are:

A - car service

B - cab with printed directions or car service

C - car service or Princess transfers

Your only easy public transit option is Newark Airport to Church St. From the airport you can take NJTransit train to Newark Penn Station for $8.25 pp and Path to World Trade Center for $2.25 pp. The Millenium Hotel is right there. For a few dollars more you can take a cab to Newark Penn Station (about $25) and Path to the World Trade Center.

It is difficult to get to the Brooklyn cruise terminal by public transit, but not impossible. Post Bwck if you are interstd in directions.

Thanks so much. Have found out that Princess do offer a debark excursion/airport transfer, but only sell it on board. Will go with that if it is offered. The train from airport to hotel (how did you know we were in that hotel) looks doable as well so that just leaves getting to port to embark, so will do that by taxi.

Again many thanks!

Ps. Are the trains safe? Only ask as we got pickpocketed on a Rome train and we thought we were pretty savvy travellers:(

Trains are safe. You should definitely be able to get a seat on Path from Newark to World Trade. Wait for the next path train if it is full. What time do you arrive in Newark?

As 138th said you are boarding PATH at its terminal, the train will pull in empty so if full, just wait for the next train.

$5 us cash there will be a machine that will sell a single metrocard with two fares on it for use only on PATH, you can use this one card twice at the turnstile for both of you. With luggage use the accessible turnstile as it is wider for wheelchairs.

Re. part A of your original question: Yes, the train & PATH train option suggested by 138east is definitely the cheapest way to get from EWR to your hotel, and it's very easy.

Just a few more details regarding this journey:

The trip actually involves three different rail segments:

1. The monorail (Airtrain) from the airport terminal to the airport rail station. (About a 10-minute ride or less; the monorail trains run continually.)

2. NJ Transit train from Newark Airport train station to Newark Penn Station.

Any train going to New York will stop at Newark Penn Station; there are generally three or four trains an hour, so you won't have to wait long--just make sure you board a NJ Transit train, not an Amtrak train. (There are electronic arrivals and departures sign boards above the station platform, and the trains also are announced.)

Buy your ticket at a ticket machine, either before you board the monorail or just after you get off the monorail. (See video 1, above. You can't miss the machines.)

The trip from the Newark Airport station to Newark Penn Station takes only four minutes, so don't get too comfortable!

3. PATH train from Newark Penn Station to the World Trade Center.

PATH trains are essentially subway (underground) type trains. The PATH trains depart just across the platform on which your train from the airport will arrive. Purchase your PATH ticket from a machine on the platform, then swipe the ticket through the electronic turnstile to enter the PATH platform proper. There may already be a PATH train waiting there; if it looks too crowded, just wait for the next train, which will be empty, as shown in this video:

The ride to the World Trade Center (the last stop on this route) takes about 20-25 minutes.

You exit the World Trade Center PATH station up a long escalator. (I think there might also be an elevator /lift, but I'm not 100% sure.)

This video, shot a few weeks ago by yours truly, shows the street-level exit of the WTC PATH station. As the camera pans left, you'll see the Millennium Hotel--the tall, thin dark glass building on the left:

So, when you come out of the station at street level, turn right on the pedestrian walkway, and then take the next right again--and you're at the hotel.

To answer your question about safety on the trains: Yes, as 138east says, the trains are quite safe. The only part of your journey that might cause a bit of discomfort is at Newark Penn Station itself--the platforms can get crowded, with people rushing on and off trains, and you might see a "character" or two or be approached by a panhandler. Just take normal sensible precautions (e.g., look like you know where you're going, and don't flash your wallet around) as you would in London, and you'll be fine. (Whatever pickpockets there might be in Newark certainly haven't learned their trade in Rome or Barcelona!)

The Millennium is a well-known hotel right across from the World Trade Center. A very good choice if you're sailing out of Brooklyn but want to stay in Manhattan.

I'm sure other posters will weigh in with specific recommendations for a car service from the hotel to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. This question comes up all the time on these boards.
