Trying Celebrity for first time?

We are loyal Royal Caribbean customers but are thinking about trying Celebrity for the first time, on the Summit. For those who have sailed both, what do you see as the advantages of Celebrity? We've been on the big 150k ton ships of RCL and am wondering about the "upscale" experience on Celebrity. Thanks for your input

A little more information, please. What age group are you in, and what kind of experience re you looking for? If you are looking for rock walls, water slides, ice skating, etc is for you. Fewer children on most Celebrity Cruises, and geared more toward adults. It is difficult to answer without knowing what you are looking for.

We've sailed many times on both and like both lines (Diamond and Elite). As stated above, RCCL is great for activities, beautiful ships and a fun, lively vacation. X is more stately, sophisticated and quiet. I also think the food is better on X. I'm in my 60's now and Celebrity is my favorite. If I were taking my Grandkids on a cruise, I'd go RCCL.

Have you seen this thread on the RCI boards? I think it's right in line with what you are looking for. It's a review of another frequent RCI cruiser who just tried the Summit.

We like RCI but have found that we like Celebrity even more. It's nice to be able to walk through a ship where the casino and certain bar areas do not smell like an ashtray. Much tighter smoking rules with no smoking allowed on the balconies either.

Only one announcement per day and that is the Captains update. It's great not having someone tell me that bingo is on in fifteen minutes or the inch of gold sale is happening now on the Royal Promenade.

Food across the board was better on X over RCI. Service was about the same which was very good. Both have great crew members IMHO.

Less kids. A much more laid back experience. If you're someone that has to have a lot of activities such as the belly flop contest, Quest, etc. to keep you busy then I don't think Celebrity is for you.

I also agree with Paul (Aquahound), read the recent review by Merion Mom about the Summit. A lot of good information.:)

I think that's a fair description. Which I'll add my 2 cents.

If I were taking children.

Children - age 5-12 - Disney or RCCL

Children - age 12-21 - RCCL

"Children" - 21 - 30 - Carnival (and hide in my room)

Over 30 - Celebrity or RCCL (Celebrity being our preferred line)
