We will be sailing out of SF on the Island in Sept. There will be 6 of us staying near the Wharf and looking for a non-tourist place to eat on the night before we sail. Any suggestions? We are staying on Columbus Ave near the HIlton but couldn't find anything in that area.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Walk about six or seven blocks Southeast on Columbus...You will be passing through an area called "North Beach"...Just start checking out menus in windows and odors emanating from the eateries...and pick any one that looks and smells good...The area is known for great Italian restaurants...and nothing like the touristy places back on Fishermans Wharf.

Agree. To avoid getting disoriented, North Beach is not along the waterfront and isn't the north part of the city. Back in the 1800's it was, but 150+ years of filling in the bay changed that. Sometimes when they're excavating they come across building rubble from the 1906 earthquake as well as timbers from ships that were all used for fill material.

Continuing up Columbus is Chinatown.

We've always had good luck with recommendations from the hotel staff.

Be aware that there is a decent hill going up Columbus.

Bonus-At one point you will pass the lower end of Lombard Street.

  • 2 weeks later...

Most non tourist places are away from North Beach. The Marina (Union and Chestnut streets) have a lot of local places. We had dinner last week at Kokkari near downtown - not cheap but very good - number one on tripadvisor and yelp.
